That's where we need to be now. Religion+Capitalism will give the go ahead for a single generation 'guck/energy blow out' that'll cause a dead world. We are mankinds and the planets best hope. Worlds can die. Biospheres can collapse to nothing. Mars for example.macdoc wrote:NOT suffereing fools gladly comes to mind.....sort like the attitude to climate change denial.

Scumple wrote:Religions only exist because of a economic substrate. Atheism doesn't need to take over the world if atheists control the worlds access to energy. Atheism will spread like the popularity of a band, by being top dog in a arena of universal human concern. It's all about the oil. Who ever controls the remaining oil owns the shop.
Hermit wrote:Theocracies controlled societies long before oil became economically significant. The Roman Catholic Church had no more economic clout than any other members of the aristocracy. Most of its material, political and social clout derived from tithes extorted by threatening eternal fire, brimstone and gnashing of teeth. You're making as much sense as usual, Scumple.
Exactly. Seems like you just shot yourself in the foot. Again.Scumple wrote:...the future cannot be judged on what happened in the past.

The future can be precisely calculated if left alone. Any change is a gamble. Foot intact.

The future follows a path neither you nor I can predict. We can but speculate. More black swans keep appearing. Foot remains shot.

I know enough about human nature to see how short sighted people are. You are shooting and it is your foot. If you see things through to the very end with the 'future quest' of this generation and you are shown a dead planet...what have you proven? I'd like to slow things down a bit before the Amazon burns down. Maybe it will anyway...nothing matters in the end. Most planets around here never complain about being devoid of life.Hermit wrote:The future follows a path neither you nor I can predict. We can but speculate. More black swans keep appearing. You are a bit mistaken about the dead planet. We will simply get rid of man and the bigger fauna. Plants and many animals will survive. They will all dance and sing when we are gone!

Yeah, some bacteria might survive in the rocks deep underground, difference from a dead planet is minuscule to zero. These are shock-runaways to the biosphere happening masked only by the brevity of human life.Tero wrote:You are a bit mistaken about the dead planet. On any given proposition you must either believe it or disbelieve it. It is binary.Blind groper wrote:Ding to the New Scientist, there are a billion confirmed atheists in the world, plus 1.5 billion apatheists. The latter do not really believe or disbelieve. They just don't give a damn.
If you don't believe, then you disbelieve. If you don't disbelieve, then you believe.
Whether or not you care about the proposition doesn't change that.

That's only true if you think about a proposition, and/or give a fuck about it.MrFungus420 wrote:On any given proposition you must either believe it or disbelieve it. Civilizations collapse very quickly once under enough strain. It's easier to save the day if you control a civilization rather than be a advisor to it.

Re: The Militant Tendency Within Atheism/Secular Rationalism
However, I also think it's likely that some of the "non-religious" are really crypto-atheists who haven't managed to come out of the cupboard; there is a view that calling yourself an atheist is labelling yourself as an aggressive, dogmatic and intolerant smart arse. Some of the statements by the "New Atheists" assist that mistaken apprehension...JimC wrote:That's only true if you think about a proposition, and/or give a fuck about it.MrFungus420 wrote:On any given proposition you must either believe it or disbelieve it. A person could also be ambivalent or conflicted. It doesn't have to be a binary.MrFungus420 wrote:On any given proposition you must either believe it or disbelieve it.
