1. United States
2. No.
3. Lost track, but dozens.
4. There are a lot of interesting places in the world, and some of them happen to be in itty bitty countries that up the country count.

dunno. i drove through 10 different countries on one trip.
never been outside of the united states of europe.
And that illustrates why most Americans, who can visit 50 states without a passport, don't have a current one.

Also, saying "American" is as clear as saying, "European", maybe even less when it comes to certain things. I get a questions like that all the time from people: "In america, do you <fill-in-the-blank>" or "In America right now the <fill-in-the-blank> is really bad, isn't it?". I always have to say, "I don't know about most of the country, but in Southern California...". Anyway, this map shows the difference by state:

1. British
2. Yes
3. The Netherlands, France, Spain, Iceland, India and the US
4. I didn't go anywhere until I was almost 30 due to a mixture of not having money and time and also just not getting around to it. Since then I've made more of an effort to see the world and I'd like to see a lot more of it with my family.

1. US
2. Yes
3. 9 or 10. I forget exactly.
4. I forgot what the last question was.

And I agree with Seabass. It's expensive and time-consuming to get to another country from the US, and depending on where in the US you live, that could include getting to Mexico or Canada. It's not like western Europe, where you can hit five or six countries in a day just by driving in a big circle. (I don't actually know if that's true or not.) Furthermore, there are still dozens of places inside the US that I want to visit, in addition to a handful more countries I have on my list.

Also, I don't think Americans even need a passport to visit Mexico for a short trip. Not sure about Canadia.

As long as they have the bribe money, all will be well! :hehe:

This concept of driving to get to another country is fucking weird, though... :nono:

You need a passport to fly to Canada or Mexico. Some frequent across the border drivers have a card.

I flew to Mexico.

Good point. I left home on my pushbike and was in France in under three hours once, and I was only 14 at the time. Even though passports were required at the time, that requirement was easily circumvented by crossing the border after 10pm when customs officials went home and simply left the boom gates open. My father took advantage of that feature by returning late from business trips with wine in the boot of his car and not having to pay excise on it.

Perhaps a better measure of parochialism is average maximum distance traveled from home

I remember as a kid when it was a big deal to meet someone from another state, much less go to another state. Now, I've spent almost 1/3 of my life in Asia.

Jim, I'd love to be able to drive to another country from here. If it weren't for those assholes up north, I could. :lay:
