How to prepare for Plagues
Surviving the Next Plague
Throughout history, plagues and epidemics have been a constant threat. In the 14th century, the bubonic plague wiped out one-third of Europe's population. Less than 100 years ago, an epidemic was responsible for millions of deaths in China and India. Recently, Lucy Tompkins, MD, a researcher at Stanford University, warned that the only question was when, not if, there would be a new worldwide plague, or pandemic.
Given the high probability of a new plague, it's natural to wonder how to protect yourself and your loved ones.
1. Create Your Own Early Warning System
There may be signs that a pandemic is developing well before any public announcement. Look for news of quarantines and shipment of medical supplies. There may be academic conferences on disease risks and control that have important information. Drug companies may announce that they are gearing up production of medications. Public Health organizations, like the World Health Organization or Centers for Disease Control will have updates and information for health professionals that can indicate the level of concern among experts.
2. Reduce Your Risk for Exposure
If a new plague occurs, you can take steps to reduce your risk for disease by avoiding contact with sick people and disease-carrying animals. Most plagues are spread through the air, by touching an exposed person, or by touching a surface that has the virus on it.
It goes without saying that you should avoid contact with infected people. Bear in mind that areas where patients are treated should also be avoided. This can include hospitals, clinics and emergency shelters that are set up as the plague continues. Invest in some basic
During a plague, there will be plenty of information available on how to recognize symptoms. Remember, however, that fever, nausea, coughing and other symptoms are also present in many other conditions. If you care for an ill person or may come into close contact, a medical face mask (http://www.areyouprepared.com/N95-Face-Masks-s/103.htm) and protective gloves will help prevent spread of most conditions.
3. Prepare for Isolation
Experts say that a pandemic could disrupt society for more than a year. During this time, it might be difficult to work or buy supplies. Many public services, such as waste disposal and clean water may not function. In time, the medical system could be overworked, vaccines and medicines could be in short supply, and law enforcement might be unable to maintain social order.

Sixty per cent mortality. Cases now popping up in neighbouring states. Some people are leaving on a jet plane.

This is why I wanted to live in the isolated hills. If it starts big time before this place sells, I'll take it off the market and tell the bank to talk to the WHO or CDC.

You don't understand the concept. If Ebola starts big time anywhere outside of bumfuck, Africa, there won't BE a market, or a bank, and your lot will belong to whomever has the ability to keep it. Might be you, but probably not.rEvolutionist wrote:This is why I wanted to live in the isolated hills. First sign of a major infection anywhere in the civilized world and air travel will have to come to an instant halt if anybody expects to survive.

Re: How to prepare for Plagues
Seth is right. In Africa its a social custom to avoid sick people like the plague, they sometimes have. The customs of close proximity which are part and parcel of the social behaviours in more mobile populated organised parts of the world are ill suited to Ebola. It's been like a death warrant on the world for so long, people have grown accustomed to the risk and maybe think the advanced world is magically protected, rather than being lucky up till now.

Re: How to prepare for Plagues
I think any major plague will by far disproportionately affect the third world. Shit will hit the fan here in the developed world, no mistake, but there won't be widescale deaths from the plague. Probably be some from city folk who run out of food and water within a week...

Re: How to prepare for Plagues
The real reason Ebola has not become pandemic already is that it's slightly too fast. It manifests and kills too quickly, which limits its ability to spread by killing off hosts before they have much contact.Scumple wrote:Seth is right. What would be an extinction event would be a form of Ebola with a 60 day incubation period that, once incubation is complete, kills within a couple of days, like the 1918 influenza epidemic that killed some 40 million people worldwide, but with an 80-90% mortality rate. The 1918 flu killed more soldiers in WWI than combat did.

Re: How to prepare for Plagues
We've been largely protected by the African traditional social behaviours that are now dwindling in the face of modernisation. Like AIDS it was a long time in Africa but once at large in the rest of the world it spread like wildfire. Modernity doesn't protect against all risks and some existential ones it will enhance. Modernity is a form of primitivism compared with what is required in the futurist vision.
