Search on after Malaysia Airlines flight vanishes
Re: Search on after Malaysia Airlines flight vanishes
I think Hollywood has made people believe far too much of what "global intelligence" systems can do. Yes, you can take high resolution pictures from a satellite, but you cannot take high resolution pictures of huge areas in a short time. And even if it was technically possible, that would mean concentrating all your resources on one wild goose chase, and I a do not think the intelligence people are stupid enough for that. Hiding should also be easier than what many people seem to think. You don't need that much camouflage to make your plane look like something other than a plane, at least to a search algorithm.
Still think it's far more likely that the plane is scattered at the bottom of the sea somewhere.
BTW, the CTBTO offeres seismic, hydroacoustic and infrasound data to scientists willing to look for the plane. In theory you could find a plane explosion in air/water or on the ground with these techniques:
Our data could potentially shed light on the whereabouts of flight MH370. We owe it to the anxious families waiting for news of their loved ones that this potential is used to its fullest. So far the processing of our data has not provided information as to the whereabouts of the plane. I therefore encourage scientists in our Member States around the world to study our data carefully and add value with their national technical means and any other means to help this search. My prayers are with the passengers of flight MH370 and their families.CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo

Yeah, that's pretty much my view as well. I suspect it's in the ocean somewhere, but it could easily have landed somewhere and be not picked up by satellites.

Re: Search on after Malaysia Airlines flight vanishes
I agree it would be easy to hide the plane from satellites, if it landed.
A few dozen pots of paint and some tarpaulins would do the job in hours.
It would be very hard to land it without anyone noticing though. I still don't understand the lack of a reward for information.
Anyway, if someone had built a runway, good enough for a 777 to land and take off, I think THAT would have already been logged by military agencies.
I'm beginning to think it's in the drink. The coincidence of the pings ceasing at about the same time the fuel would run out is a bit of an indication in that direction.
It might be just a simple case of pilot gone mad, and no mobile phone coverage on his chosen route.
Might. Might not.

I feel bad for the family and friends of the passengers. It must be hell not definitively knowing if they are alive or dead.

Failure of structural integrity of the nose/windscreen enough to damage communications and navigation gear, low altitude could indicate loss of cabin pressure. They might have flown for hours in the hope of striking land and bringing the plane down safely, but not found it in time?

Highly unlikely. That's making the assumption that the controls that switch the transponders off would do that when damaged. It's more likely that they would be designed to do nothing, in the event of damage.Scumple wrote:Failure of structural integrity of the nose/windscreen enough to damage communications and navigation gear, low altitude could indicate loss of cabin pressure. Anyway, the 777 is one of the safest plane ever made. And planes are incredibly safe as it is.

I'm sure someone on that plane had a phone with a working gps chipScumple wrote:Failure of structural integrity of the nose/windscreen enough to damage communications and navigation gear, low altitude could indicate loss of cabin pressure. So many cell phones and so much silence. Could be all the passengers got sucked out the plane?MiM wrote:I'm sure someone on that plane had a phone with a working gps chipScumple wrote:Failure of structural integrity of the nose/windscreen enough to damage communications and navigation gear, low altitude could indicate loss of cabin pressure. Re: Search on after Malaysia Airlines flight vanishes
One possibility that springs to mind with respect to the above, is a repeat of the Aloha Airlines incident, where the entire roof peeled off the plane. But I don't think a 777 would suffer from that very readily, unless it has suffered from some seriously bad maintenance.

The ALoha plance was decades old and hop type flying which stressed the frame.
A 777 is new and much much stronger.
I'm quite certain it was hijacked and likely by Al Qaeda - too many things point to that including evidence preceding the flight.

It certainly is a puzzle. When you start to add and subtract knowns and unknowns you can't help but feel it's a bit weird as the days go by and nothing turns up.

Re: Search on after Malaysia Airlines flight vanishes
more detail on that sighting
Residents of the remote Maldives island of Kuda Huvadhoo in Dhaal Atoll have reported seeing a "low flying jumbo jet" on the morning of the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
Whilst the disappearance of the Boeing 777 jet, carrying 239 passengers has left the whole world in bewilderment, several residents of Kuda Huvadhoo told Haveeru on Tuesday that they saw a "low flying jumbo jet" at around 6:15am on March 8.
They said that it was a white aircraft, with red stripes across it – which is what the Malaysia Airlines flights typically look like.
Eyewitnesses from the Kuda Huvadhoo concurred that the aeroplane was travelling North to South-East, towards the Southern tip of the Maldives – Addu. They also noted the incredibly loud noise that the flight made when it flew over the island.
"I've never seen a jet flying so low over our island before. We've seen seaplanes, but I'm sure that this was not one of those. I could even make out the doors on the plane clearly," said an eyewitness.
"It's not just me either, several other residents have reported seeing the exact same thing. Some people got out of their houses to see what was causing the tremendous noise too."
