The gf and I were convinced that at least one of them, if not both would die. Either Rust would die the predictable hero's death thereby ending his own misery, or Marty would die, ironically leaving Rust to trudge on through life's emptiness.

We were actually shocked to see them both survive.

Yeah, that and I was expecting someone closer to them to be guilty. I think the way it ended leaves the possibility that there will be another season. They said something about not having caught nearly all of the perps, etc.

The series premise is that each season will be a self-contained story with its own cast of characters. So I doubt we will be seeing Marty and Rust again. :(

I think a grim ending would have been more predictable and less appropriate given the subject matter.
Trigger Warning!!!1! :
Since both characters were fighting the darkness within themselves and without. I found the scene with Rust talking about him fading out and becoming aware of his dead daughters love inredibly touching and even if the last lines were ripped directly from Alan Moore's Top Ten, it worked. For me anyway.

Yeah, Rust survived a pretty severe gutting a bit too easily. If the cavalry had shown up right away with paramedics and a helicopter cable lift out the hole in the roof and an intense ER session I might have believed it...but laying there for hours till the troops arrived and found them? Not likely.

Not sure I liked his short-lived hallucination that caused him to lose situational awareness so he could get jumped in the first place either. A bit to satan-ex-machina for me, given his generally well-portrayed situational awareness and gun handling.

Then there's the typical mano-a-mano pissing match with the villain. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy to stand there with his victim fucking about in a display of strength, I'd have thought he'd stab him six times in two seconds and back off and watch him die slowly. Same with the other guy. The hatchet throw was good, but any halfway competent killer would have rushed him and smashed his brains out while he was stunned.

Then again Hollywood always has to make incompetents out of otherwise competent people in order to jack the suspense because in reality the first blow wins the contest most of the time because the loser is paralyzed with the shock at least long enough for the coup de gras to be delivered.

That's what I kind of liked about Steven Segal movies...or the last 30 minutes of "Zero Dark Thirty," when the good guy shoots the bad guy the bad guy just goes right ahead and obligingly dies like he's supposed to.
I vividly remember seeing a Chuck Norris movie in the theater when it came out with another cop buddy. So Chuck is fighting off legions of Ninjas climbing cliffs and rappelling from helicopters and shooting at him with machine guns with only his bare hands and karate skills. He smacks down person after person carrying a machine gun, ignoring the people shooting at him from the helicopters. After about the third such display of machismo my buddy and I are literally shouting from the balcony, "PICK UP THE MACHINE GUN!" and laughing our asses off, to the ire of the rest of the audience.

From then till now "PICK UP THE MACHINE GUN!" is my expletive of choice when I see stupid Hollywood non-verisimilitude in action.
