Search on after Malaysia Airlines flight vanishes

A search is under way in waters between Malaysia and Vietnam after a Malaysia Airlines plane vanished on a flight to Beijing, with 239 people on board.

Malaysia Airlines said in a statement that flight MH370 had disappeared at 02:40 local time on Saturday (18:40 GMT on Friday) after leaving Kuala Lumpur.

It had been expected to land in Beijing at 06:30 (22:30 GMT).

Malaysia's transport minister said there was no information on wreckage and he urged against speculation.

"We are doing everything in our power to locate the plane. We are doing everything we can to ensure every possible angle has been addressed," Hishammuddin Hussein told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

Doesn't look like this will end well. :(
Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

Could still turn up on tarmac somewhere.

Isn't there a way to track a plane with GPS or something? I mean in this day and age, even if radio contact has been lost, how do you just lose an airplane?
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

That's why it's so unlikely to end with any sort of good news. The most probable answer is something happened that was catastrophically destructive.

What's the latest? Quite a few hours ago they were saying that there were reports it had crashed off the coast of Vietnam.

Vietnamese air force planes have spotted two large oil slicks that authorities suspect are from a Malaysian jetliner that went missing early Saturday. A Vietnamese government statement says the slicks were spotted off the southern tip of Vietnam. The slicks were each between 10 and 15 kilometres long. The statement said the slicks were consistent with the kinds that would be left by fuel from a crashed jetliner.

It had just crossed into Vietnamese air space, from Malasia.
Doubtful if it was a shooting down, but has to be a bomb. What else could break it up so fast, that they couldn't use the radio? Or suicide by pilot, I suppose.
But if a pilot deliberately crashed a plane, people would probably be able to phone, before it hit the water.
There's no suggestion of any inherent structural faults in the Boeing 777 that could break it up.

Very sad.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

There ya go. A cheap knock-off of a regular air defense zone, but with cheap-but-lethal ingredients.
