The Jan 2014 edition is redone, slightly, for the first 8 albums in US format. Albums past Rubber Soul are there too, but they have less tracks than UK version. There are some (12?) American special tracks among a bunch of albums. I actually like the early albums in mono, the first 11 tracks, and then follows the stereo. The old edition, smaller case here, was reversed.

Hey Jude is a 10 song US only offering. You can put it together with songs you have. None of the tracks are unique to this.
Side one[edit]
"Can't Buy Me Love" – 2:19
"I Should Have Known Better" – 2:39
"Paperback Writer" – 2:14
"Rain" – 2:58
"Lady Madonna" – 2:14
"Revolution" – 3:21
Side two[edit]
"Hey Jude" – 7:05
"Old Brown Shoe" (George Harrison) – 3:16
"Don't Let Me Down" – 3:30
"The Ballad of John and Yoko" – 2:55

In playing all this older material, Beatles for Sale has kind of replaced A Hard Day's Night as a go to album for "just some Beatles". I still don't play No Reply, but since it is first, I can easily jump over it. It has some folky tunes that anticipate Rubber Soul. And 13* decent tracks! The stereo mixes are fine for me. The lyrics are mostly good, just one or two stick out words like "whim."

Help was never a personal favorite, I just use the songs for play lists. Though Help and Ticket to Ride define the sound for that period.

*Well, there is Mr Moonlight. I'm starting to enjoy the cheesy organ on it as a guilty pleasure. And I'm glad Leave My Kitten Alone is not in its place.

For the recent US Capitol releases, Beatles' 2nd stands up well, though it is half covers.

Isn't the Beatles' early catalogue completely different between the UK and the USA? :?

Yes, you get 11 songs on US albums, UK albums 14 and no singles. That is why they are ripping us off again. Only Rubber Soul was superior in US.

Armed only with a yamaha nylon string guitar, I'm going thru a couple of sheet music books for Beatles Appreciation. I may eventually get a feel for chords, though...like most people..my sense of melody usually guides me. I'm starting to wonder how much guidance George Martin gave in selecting chords. You can play a number of chords as long as the melody note you are supporting is in the chord.

Yes. Capitol Records held back a few songs from each "official" British album, and fleeced the fans by releasing an "extra" album every so often, which never got released in the UK.
The Beatles got so fed up with them "Butchering" their albums, they did this:

I think Sgt Pepper was the first Beatles album to have the same number of tracks (and the same tracks) on both sides of the Atlantic.

It was. There was an extra album between Revolver and Pepper and the cover had the butcher pic for s few days. Yesterday and Today. Predictably it has Yesterday on it. Plus Rubbersoul outtakes.

It was a rush album for US tour, so it came out a bit before Revolver. It robbed Revolver of several Lennon songs in US version.

I have the Beatles Blue collection in the car, and do play it quite a bit. For my iPod I added songs to the basic set up. And Long and Whiny road sucks as CD end piece, Let IT Be is better. This is CD 2.CD 1 has less changes

Got me listening to my Beatles again. Not avid in collecting their stuff, still got enough to confirm that they are mostly hype, the only significant edge they had was being first on the scene, and plenty of practice on the circuit...a scene which with improvements in recording technology, electric guitars and so forth was a scene in waiting for someone to become a leader in.

Been listening to Christy Moore on CD through a proper hi-fi. No comparing. Not only can Christy Moore sing, he can play the guitar too - rather than strum it.

You seem to have grasped some of the FIRST bit of this band. Without them, this is all you would have heard till 1970:

Beatles may have inspired some experimentation amongst their contemporary mates, would have happened anyway with lots of new kit becoming affordable and may even have been more interesting without them, they also lead to a stale repetitive format reminiscent of the thirties/forties and fifties big band era that record companies flogged to death.
