Well I'm sure science will figure it out. Not exactly rocket science.
Though I do recall one of the explanations for things like the Bermuda triangle was a methane gas release that caused ships to suddenly sink or planes fall from the air due to a much lower buoyancy. The sediment disruption would also bury any evidence. I always thought that sounded quite plausible, but difficult to prove.

I'm just denying peak oil predictions. Methane comes up as liquified natural gas, which can be easily refined into oil.
