Nor mine. I've never tried, but I doubt very much if I would even rise to the occasion, under those circumstances. Although I know people who do, and that's their business.

I've often heard the comment though, that it isn't just prozzies who do it for money, lots of relationships and marriages could qualify too. Having overheard girls talking many times over the years, I'm sure that there's some truth in that. And it's probably happening in the opposite direction too, these days.

Money makes no difference. Get real, stop counting.

I had a friend who was on the game years ago. She was what in the sixties and seventies would be called a wild woman, high sex drive, the money was a bonus for what is natural and nowadays with condom use it is rather obvious where all the wild women who made the sixties and seventies so exciting are. Imagine the spread of aids if the wild women were out like in the old days? Sex is the most natural thing in the world, society is evolving structures to keep the pleasure safe.

So a brothel that has 31 private rooms and services "hundreds" of punters each day is described as a "mega-brothel". Isn't that stretching it a bit?

If the punters are only in the hundreds, that's an hecto brothel, not kilo.

That's tabloid journalism for you.

In most of Australia, perhaps even all of it, I don't know, prostitution in brothels has been legal for a number of years. I'm all for it. If you can't abolish prostitution it is better to regulate it for the better. Although it does nothing for the remaining street walkers nor the prevalence of drug addiction, it gives prostitutes more protection from abuse by customers and pimps, improves their prospects of not contracting a sexually transmitted disease, improves their share of the earnings and work conditions and the government gets to tax the lot.

Consider me one of the choir. Our prostitution laws are daft and only succeed in putting prostitutes in more harmful situations.

I forgot who said it, but I love the quote, "it's illegal to sell something that you can legally give away for free". Or words to that effect.

Funny, but in France there are things you can legally give for free but not sell... Blood and organs for instance : you can donate them freely, but it is expressly forbidden to have them be the object of a commercial transaction.

There is a move afoot here to make it illegal to buy sex for money. I would have thought those days were long gone given the practical realities that people will always do this whatever the law says but it seems it is being smuggled in under proposed new people trafficking and exploitation laws.

Prostitution, OTOH, is not regulated under that rationale, it's openly soliciting that's forbidden, as well as pimping (including the kind done by brothels)... There was a project to punish the customer like they do in Sweden not long ago, but I've not been hearing about it lately, so I guess it didn't passs or got buried in procedure.

Apparently, especially big business can be made at the French-German border with many customers coming from France. I saw a talkshow with the mayor of Saarbrücken who was worried about the image of her City when there are more and more brothels and all the French sex tourists.

There was a big discussion on the issue some time ago. Some politicians wanted to turn back time and make sex work illegal by following the Swedish example and making it illegal for the customers. However, surveys show that a huge majority of the population is in favour of legalized sex work. So they introduced the idea of making it punishable for sex work customers if those are aware that the sex worker is illegal and forced to act against their own will. Since this would already be considered rape in most cases, this move was interpreted as introducing a requirement for registration of sex workers which the politically organized sex workers are absolutely against.

However, in the meantime, the discussion has stopped since the government is now busy with handling a scandal about a government politician buying child porn and having been warned by the interior minister about police investigations...

The sooner gummits get their hidden-agenda-polluted hands out of people's sex lives, the better. Of all the things teh gummits needs to keep their noses out of, it's what mutually consenting adults choose to do with their genitals and with whom.

Sexual mores are in transition. The forces of change should be focused on disease prevention, personal autonomy and safety. Idiots with other agendas can wait.
