The Man From Nowhere. Korean thriller revenge film. Unexpectedly melodramatic at the end (though of course I cried) but pretty good nonetheless.

Watched Wolf of Wall Street the night before last and thought it was really good. Not The Departed or Taxi Driver good, but still pretty excellent.

Lat night we watched Gravity. Meh. It looked really good, and the first 30 minutes were compelling, but after a one disaster after another, and some pretty cheesy dialogue I just wanted it to get to the end.

Inside Llewyn Davies. A great lead performance, though of an unsympathetic character, a nice cat, beautiful cinematography, a few laughs. 3.5 out of 5

Going to see 12 Years A Slave later.

Was afraid Llewyn Davis was turning into a road movie at one point.

Robbie the Reindeer, a British claymation affair comprised of two shorts on one disc. Odd, I could've sworn I'd watched this before but I didn't remember a single thing. Well, a single thing except one: that all the voice acting was dubbed over with American actors for the U.S. release. Maybe my disgust over that prevented me from ever watching the show the first time.
This time I watched a bit of it and thought it was rubbish. Then I checked the audio options and was relieved to see I could switch over to the original British voice acting cast. So I did. Wow, what a transformation. The characters went from mind-numbingly banal to clever and charming and full of personality.
Still not at the level of quality of, say, Wallace and Grommit. But good fun nonetheless as long as you watch it in its original form as intended.

I particularly liked one of the British voice actors and had to look her up. It's Jane Horrocks with her distinctive Lancashire accent. She was Bubble on Absolutely Fabulous. I knew she sounded familiar.

Was terrified it was going to turn into a movie with a point at what point.

I still liked it, but what the fuck?

The thing you have to understand with animations is that they record the voices first before they do the animation. The animation is then synced with the acting. One consequence of this is that the animated characters often take on the traits of the actors representing them. That's why even though it may seem that you can get away with dubbing animation more so than film, you sort of can't really.

In addition to the American voice acting being anemic, they also changed certain words. At one point, for instance, Robbie was going to be roasted and turned into curry. American version changed curry to fondue. Because, you know, fondue is so very American :?

Philomena. I enjoyed it.

I also learned from this movie that the Catholic Church isn't so great.

Yeah, surprised me too.

Byzantium. A bit like a cross Eastenders, Scooby-Doo and a tuberculosis ward, redeemed by Gemma Arterton forgetting to wear very much. Some of the characters really needed a haircut.

The Master. I've had this kicking around for a while and decided to watch it today for obvious reasons!

The awesome, central performances by both Joachim Phoenix and Philip Seymour-Hoffman lead this rambling tale of a troubled WWII veteran and his relationship with an L. Ron Hubbard style cult leader. It's perhaps a little too long but I found it impossible to take my eyes from it. Thoroughly recommended.

I tweeted about The Master. I said bad things about it. :hehe: Only 160 characters or less, though.

Doesn't matter if he's dead, I still HATE it. I like Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood from PTA. Magnolia was okay.
