Facebook suits me just fine. Along with email and skype it is a convenient and cheap means of staying in contact with family and friends all over the world. Because I have insisted so far to limit my list of contacts to only those people I have met in person, the list is rather small, but it keeps things simple. One thing facebook is not at all suited for, is sustained discussions of any sort, but then that is not its purpose right from its inception.

Google+ is actually pretty good. 
It's not as intimately social as Facebook, but that's why I like it. There are a lot of cool feeds with interesting / genuinely funny stuff.
