Well, I don't know where the fuck you live, since you don't announce it in your profile, and the discussion was at that point about New Zealand, so if the argument doesn't apply to you (which it does) then just shut the fuck up and quit obfuscating and pettifogging.
As for Oz, substitute the word "aboriginals" for "Maori" and the argument absolutely applies to you, who lives on a continent that was invaded and subjugated by the Brits and used as a penal colony to imprison British scum of the earth for fuck's sake. If you're trying to tell me that the British Crown didn't violently fuck over the Aborigines in Australia for generation after generation and that the Aborigines would have not been better off if they had arms parity with the Brits when the Brits showed up I'll just call you a liar.

The whole point here is not to condemn one society or another, it is to point out that no human society on earth that exists or has ever existed or will ever exist is better off when law-abiding citizens are disarmed and criminals (of every stripe including rioters) are not. And because it is factually and physically impossible to completely disarm criminals and prevent them from using weapons that cause or threaten to cause serious bodily harm and/or death, because human beings come with at least four of them built in (hands and feet for the mentally challenged), and because human beings are tool-using creatures who can create deadly weapons out of the simplest materials like rocks and sticks, it is therefore idiocy of the highest order to legislate away the right of the law-abiding citizen to have, at his option, at a minimum, arms parity and optimally arms superiority over any potential attacker.
It's just exactly that simple.
