I just looked at Ooodnadatta on Google earth....




....I'm still trying to work out why anyone would want to live there. It looks like a failed Mars colony, or something.
In fact, I'll bet Mars has more water per square mile.

Oodnadatta's reason to exist (the rail, and before that the overland telegraph) ceased to exist over 30 years ago. It beats me why people still live there - sparse tourist trade (mainly in winter) I guess.

I got no AC, and I do suffer in the heat. Luckily, we don't get too much of real oppressive heat.

The best thing I've found, is a hand sprayer, with cold water. Every now and then I spray water on any bit of exposed skin, and let it evaporate off.
It works well. Or just a wet cloth does the same job.

LAST year I got a great weekend of riding in mid January....not looking too likely - bikes are huddled around the trickle chargers.

That only works with dry heat. I'm in the subtropics so it's humid heat, generally speaking (although, I'm up in the mountains, so it's less humid here than on the coast). But I did actually do what you suggested, but on a grand scale, in the middle of the day when it was 37C and dry before the storms moved in. Got nekid and hosed myself off in the yard. Then stood in the shade and let the breeze (albeit warm) evaporate the water off me.

We've had four or five days with temperatures above 40°C so far, a couple of them before summer officially started. No humidity to speak of, but still not particularly comfortable. I'm really looking forward to getting the air conditioning of the truck I'm driving fixed - and autumn.

I have spent a lot of time in Australia, and have probably seen more of that immense country than most of its natives. I have also experienced its full temperature range. I am retired now, and definitely do NOT live in Australia.

My home in the north of NZ, on the coast, has never experienced a temperature of less than +5C on the coldest part of the coldest winter day of the past 8 years, at least. It has never hit more than 29C on the hottest part of the hottest day over the same period. Today it is 25 C.

Just checked. Tomorrow is the real hot one. 41 in the inland suburbs of brisbane, 43 in Ipswich and the western suburbs, and 44 in Beaudesert just to the south of Brisbane. That's insane temperatures for Brisbane.

Just checked the Brissy forecast and it's going to be a bit humid too. I'm staying in Caboolture which might be a couple of degrees cooler. At least I have air conditioned hire car and motel room.

Wrong- it was hotter. The locals tell me it got to about 44C, though I couldn't find any official conformation, though it was 42 C over at the nearest coast and that should be cooler than a few km inland where I am. Air conditioner in this motel room is struggling.

I remember one summer, years ago, it was particularly hot.
We used to play snooker regularly back then. The snooker hall didn't have installed AC, but it had a portable one with a very powerful output.

You could be feeling fairly comfortable, and suddenly find yourself sweating and suffering.
And every time it was just after they switched that poxy AC machine on.
It did blow out cool air, but it worked by evaporation, and was far more effective as a humidifier, than it was as an air cooler. They are absolute shite. They just blow huge amounts of moist humid air around the place.
They are ok, if you stand directly in front of them. Otherwise, they're a bloody liability.
