I checked my smartphone and it confirmed what I had suspected: Yes, we did have weather today. This sort of shit always happens while I'm busy. :nono:

Vic and Gisela Baniuk usually invite their family for a big holiday dinner. This year the couple shivered by candlelight in their Toronto home, which has been without power for four days.
oh joy  Brings a whole new meaning to candlelight dining.

Wow, pretty. Reminds me of the beautiful ice storms in Michigan from when I was a kid in the 1960s and 1970s.

Get ready for more...

This is a very good analysis of why the warming Arctic is driving the wild weather.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/cap ... outbreaks/

snip
Bottom Line: Arctic warming, regardless of causative mechanism (warm season diminishing sea ice, radiative processes, fall to winter Siberian snow, etc.) must be coupled with the corresponding wind field (thermal wind relationship), which in turn plays an important role in weather events. In this investigation of before and after turn of the century winters, this warming signal is manifest in the form of an unmistakable –NAO signal. More specifically, the before and after winters show a shift in the polar jet southward with a zone of weaker zonal winds to the north at mid-to-high latitudes. This is recognized as conducive to development of high amplitude, slow moving, features (e.g., blocking) favorable for significant to extreme weather events.

More to come in Britain too....
More storms ahead as thousands still without power

More gales and heavy rain are set to hit the UK as the Environment Agency warns of further significant disruption from floods in southern England.

Many rivers remain swollen after storm damage caused power cuts and travel delays. More than 50 flood warnings are in place for England and Wales.

About 1,200 homes in south-east and south-west England have been flooded.

Everything is good here in Oz. Although, I heard a few days ago there was a cyclone brewing to the west of Darwin. That's ok though. Only about 3 people live to the west of Darwin.

It's utterly awful here! There's some wind and rain outside (that you can hear if you listen hard) and a bit of a draught. I think I'll pull through though. Stiff upper-lip and all that. :tea:

I just watched the yearly weather round up, in which many randoms were interviewed, all of them seemed stunned by cold weather, winds, warm weather, rain, sunsets and wheeled chariots. Do they keep these fuckers in storage and just wheel them out to make them comment on the weather. "I've never seen weather like it!"

Yeah because you've lived in a fucking box most of your life. Clever editing cuts out the bit where they all beg to be released. And in case you think I'm taking the piss, it seems that Jimmy Savile was a procurer of children.

Think of it like a BBC version of the Magdalene Laundries only with a lot more DJ child fucking parties.

It's been a strange year down here. We've had pretty much the best weather in the country for the whole year. Knock wood, we'll probably get 10 Cat 5s next summer. Come on down while we're still standing, there are plenty of hotel rooms and Mickey Mouse is dying to see you.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Rum wrote:We have a 'yellow, amber, red' weather warning system in place these days in the UK. Of course nobody actually knows what these mean except the weather people themselves so every time one of these pops up they have to explain the whole system over again which kind of defeats the objective I would have thought.

Anyway overnight we have an 'amber alert' in place. More heavy rain and storm force winds on top of recently flooded land and disruption.

Looks like a breezy wet couple of days!
We seem to have adopted the same system in Ireland. The southern and western coastal areas were bright red last night, and the rest of the country was orange.

I think red means "hide under the bed", and orange means "keep a torch handy, and don't drive".
