iPhones can kill you

... if you use them while charging with an "unoffical" charger:

Thai man reportedly dies clutching his scorched iPhone 4S

A 28-year-old Thai man has become the latest to die after talking on his iPhone whilst it was charging, according to local media reports.

The man from Chanthaburi province was discovered lying face down on the cement floor of his room clutching a black 4S device which was plugged into the wall through a charger.

His 52-year-old father heard his son making noises the night before but didn’t investigate because he thought he was sleepwalking, according to dailynews.co.th (via TechInAsia).

The man apparently had scorch marks on his chest and left hand, which was burned onto the device.

Electrocution is suspected as the cause of death but the authorities are waiting on the results of an autopsy.

Judging by the photo accompanying the local news report of the man’s death, he was not using an official Apple charger.

Third-party chargers have been suspected of playing a part in the deaths of other iPhone users in the region over the past few months – to the point where Apple launched a new guide on its China site showing users how to identify 'official' power adapters.

Ma Ailun, a 23-year-old former flight attendant with China Southern Airlines, was electrocuted in July trying to receive a call while her iPhone was charging.

It emerged a few days later that a 30-year-old Beijing man had been in a coma for over ten days after the same thing happened, while reports from Chongqing circulated on the web that an iPhone 4 had exploded while its owner was asleep.

From August to October Cupertino launched a "USB Power Adapter Takeback Program to enable customers to acquire properly designed adapters" at a discounted price of $10.

I call BS. Unless he had it hooked into a line transformer that shorted and ran 20,000 VAC down some 8 gauge wires to his phone, then BS.

5VDC at 1 amp is not enough to arc. It would melt the the insulation on the wires from the charger to the phone in an instant, shorting them across and returning to the tranformer which would promptly explode in a puff of that wonderful 'electronic' burning smell (more likely the copper in the wires would melt). If there was an ounce of truth to this. Of course, I'm assuming there was a fault with the transformer for the previous two sentences.

I must admit, we tend to take the safety of adapters for granted. I would have thought that the lack of instances of electrocution in the media would indicate that there was fundamental safety in the basic design. The numbers in circulation are absolutely staggering, so if there was a weakness, we would be reading about it.

Maybe a really cheap crappy unit could get cracked, and get wet in a kitchen, or bathroom, enabling the mains voltage to jump internally to the low voltage output.
They are usually made of very strong plastic, but you don't know what's circulating in the far-east.

240VAC I believe.

I think so too.
240VAC is more than enough to kill you, but the source of the story doesn't inspire any credulity.
I have the scars to show what 240v can do though. I should be dead, but miraculously survived two or three minutes of full electrocution when I was three. I can still remember it clearly.

If your hand actually grips the live object, you can't let it go. All of your muscles contract, so you just can't release your grip.
The only thing that can stop it is pulling the plug, and that's not always easy, with 240v making you jump several feet in the air. It's a horrendous experience, so I'm ultra-careful now with mains voltage.

Currently I'm undecided, but I may have the capacity to make a decision about this issue, possibly via induction...

iPhones are only deadly to the overworked slaves at Foxconn, driven to suicide by the despair of soldering the damned things together.

Yep, 240V is what's in the mains in Thailand. Knock-off electronics out of China are usually cheap, plentiful and sold on the sly without quality control regulations. Even so, I think it would take a few coincidences for something like this to happen. Not the least of which would involve those people having power supplies that didn't have fuses/breakers.

That sounds sensible. But if there was even the slightest chance of them being live, I wouldn't risk it.
I was only three when it happened to me, but I can vouch for the fact that you can't let go. It was an electric one-bar fire, and it wasn't switched on when I got hold of it. My five-year-old brother plugged it in. And he's been trying to kill me ever since.

Another time I got the full 240 was when I shared a business with a friend. He had wired up the plug of a freezer, without properly clamping the cord where it goes into the plug.
Someone had pulled on the plug, to make it reach the socket, and had pulled the earth wire across, and it was resting against the live wire. The freezer was completely live, but it had rubber feet, so it didn't blow the fuse.

I walked up to the freezer in my bare feet, and reached for the handle. Luckily, I wasn't looking what I was doing, which saved my life. I missed the handle, and just brushed it with the tip of my little finger. The power shot up my arm and down my body into the floor, it was like being hit with a sledge-hammer. If I'd been looking, and gripped the handle, I'd be dead now.
Even just the slightest brush against 240v is astounding, the power involved. Especially in bare feet.

Yeah, definitely. But if you are intent to do it, do it with the back of your hand. I've used that technique quite a bit working on home wiring. I just instinctively do it now, even when I know the mains power is off and the breakers tripped.

 Yeah, I've seen someone electrocuted before. He was a kitchen hand and was cleaning behind the freezer and got zapped. It threw him half way across the kitchen. Scary sight. (he was fine, other than a bit "shocked"... hurr hurr... :) )
