Well I am pretty sure there's summat, like. Not a god or anyfing, not some old bloke on a cloud or any of that crap but, you know, like an energy, or a force, not like in star wars or owt, but well maybe a bit like that, sort of like crystals and power and stuff. I mean the Indians in America they were more in tune with nature than we are and some of them lived to be like 200 or something - I saw it on Youtube! And I mean there just has to be something, right, or else what are we all here for? Right? I mean, just for Big Brother and the X Factor? I don't THINK so!
People are confused about religion and spirituality, and recommitting to Christian education in schools would fix all that. Just not the way you wanted

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Being "spiritual" in Joe Public's perspective (assuming Joe claims not to ally with any religion) is simply comfort seeking of another form. There's often a large ego at play in the guise of Joe feeling his essential part to play in the grand scheme of things (I exist ergo I must have a purpose).
What's wrong with just knowing that we are "offspring of the stars"? That's just fucking AWEsome.

They have feelings about something big and universal. And the kindness of man. There must be a great spirit somewhere. And he wants you to win the lotto and then do good deeds.

I wouldn't like to generalise - there may not be a Mr Average beyond the media construct. I've never met him anyway. And then there's my wife's unique perspective.
