The Gauls were a menace to the Empire? Damn, I thought Gaul was one of the least problematic areas of the Empire once Caesar finished conquering them... we just became Romanized too fast to ever revolt.

Asterix lives in a world where you can send a human several meters in the air from one magic potion enhanced punch without causing deadly trauma.

Good, now get to church.JimC wrote:Thank you Dave!DaveDodo007 wrote:It's bullshit as the Jews where never a serious problem for Rome, as shown when they kicked them out of Judea in 70CA. If they where going to go down this route they would have done it against the Gauls who were a serious threat. The dead sea scrolls where written before the alleged birth of Christ and just the produce of some crazy Jewish sect (of which there where tens if not hundreds at the time) spanning approx 200 years. The guy doesn't even seem to have much knowledge of ancient Greek or Hebrew, how come this link seems to have passed by Joel Watts, Simon Mason and even (spit) Richard Carrier. Whom have all written on the subject on mimetics of the Gospel of Mark.

So, based on this silly theory the Romans eventually forgot the joke since the Empire converted to Christianity.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Don't buy this joke book. Thr guy is funding himself.
The set up of The Jesus Cult, Christology, is well known and can be mapped out based on the texts. There are several books on this. We will never know the authors of the NT. It was intentional. Even Paul is mostly made up, his legend.

Whether it's true or not, I find it interesting.
Ken Humphries, the man he is appearing with, is hugely entertaining, whether he is right or not.
He researches properly, and his facts are reliable. You can make up your own mind about the conclusions.
I haven't heard of this before, but I'll certainly look at it, for entertainment purposes if nothing else.

Re: Ancient Confession Found: 'We Invented Jesus Christ'
Atwill has an interesting hypothesis, and such an extraordinary claim should elicit skepticism, lest we fall victim to confirmation bias. The timing of the writings of Josephus and the gospels support the timeline of Atwill's argument, but without reading his book and referencing both the NT and War of the Jews, I can't further validate Atwill's claims.
Atwill also addresses the eventual conversion of Rome to Christianity on his blog. He posits that Constantine used Christianity as a tool to restructure Roman society, including revoking the property rights of the coloni.

Re: Ancient Confession Found: 'We Invented Jesus Christ'
It's an interesting take on the Christian Story, but it's hugely lacking in evidence.
It's also not one of those things that becomes obvious, once you hear it.
Evolution was like that for me. First time I heard it, everything fell into place so perfectly, I just knew it was right.
This comes across as something that you have to work at, to make it fit.
But it does once again highlight the lack of history to back up the Jesus story. The gospels could have been written by anyone, so I agree that it's perfectly feasible that the Romans wrote the lot.
But you would have to explain where St. Paul fits into the story, in a convincing fashion. St Pauls writings would have to be a pack of lies for this to be true. That's what it looks like to me anyway, but I'm certainly no expert.
From what I've read, I get the impression that much of what St. Paul wrote was based on a real person who did exist, even if he bent the truth a lot.

Re: Ancient Confession Found: 'We Invented Jesus Christ'
Actually, if the Romans wrote it, they used highly skilled forgers, for many NT texts do show signs of having been written by people who were neither Native Latin nor Greek speakers...
i.e. the Greek of the original is awkward, but the mistakes are not typical of a Roman writing in Greek.
