I can't read this article because... I'm not going to say it again... ;)

But is this legit?

To me, it seems that he has created a narrative that could, in a rather speculative way, fit with the known historical facts as an alternative to the standard historical Jesus narrative.

Rather different to a proof, I would say...

Wouldn't surprise me. If true they left an exquisite corpse.

The Da Vinci Code movie and the money side is going to weigh heavy with this. The original story is out of copyright isn't it? :coffee:

Doesn't look legit. Romans aiming at pacifying the masses would not have done so in a way that actually rocked the boat (remember how the Empire's unity was based around the Imperial Cult... the one thing the chretins refused most stoutly?)... they'd have gone for inclusive, not exclusive.

The biblical/roman times were interesting history. Rome had power all over the Mediterranean. The stories collected about Jesus most likely rose among Jews. It took a while for Rome to pick up on it. Transportation made advances back then, so ideas spread quite fast in Roman times. But most of this involved ethnic groups. Rome had access to this via Greek, the language of learning.

Look up crcufixion in Wiki for interesting back ground.

Except of course, those cults became popular in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, so the supposed 1st century plot comes too early to be plausible.

Ah, yes very good point. But then they probably faked a couple of centuries too.

Earliest mentions of christians (about Nero's reaction to the 68 Great Fire of Rome and around the reign of Vespasian was'nt it?) can hardly be faked.

I think there were mentions is Flavius Josephus from the times of Vespasian or Titus, and some in Tacitus and Suetonius from 115-120.

I'm not sure but wasn't Suetonius basically writing the history for the end of Nero and the Flavians? Could there have been four roman intellectuals involved in some Borges type creation each one playing Mat Mark luke and John?

I mean it's nonsense, since Christianity was all over the place in different forms by the first century, but it's a fun thought, nothing more.

It's bullshit as the Jews where never a serious problem for Rome, as shown when they kicked them out of Judea in 70CA. If they where going to go down this route they would have done it against the Gauls who were a serious threat. The dead sea scrolls where written before the alleged birth of Christ and just the produce of some crazy Jewish sect (of which there where tens if not hundreds at the time) spanning approx 200 years. The guy doesn't even seem to have much knowledge of ancient Greek or Hebrew, how come this link seems to have passed by Joel Watts, Simon Mason and even (spit) Richard Carrier. Whom have all written on the subject on mimetics of the Gospel of Mark.
