Annie Lennox calls for pop video ratings

Pop star Annie Lennox has described the sexualised imagery of modern pop videos as "dark" and "pornographic".

"I'm all for freedom of expression," she told BBC Radio 5 live, "but this is clearly one step beyond, and it's clearly into the realm of porn."

"How do you stop your kids being exposed to it? It's so powerful. You don't want to see your seven-year-old girls twerking all over the place."

The singer has called for pop videos to be rated in the same way as films.

She previously wrote on her Facebook page that if a pop star created "a soft porn video or highly sexualised live performance, then it needs to qualify as such and be X-rated for adults only".

She told 5 live pressure from parents could help to establish "very clear boundaries" on acceptable standards in videos.

One of the many reasons we don't have cable television and we closely monitor the kids when they're on YouTube.

How does a rating stop kids being exposed to it?

Film ratings work only at the theater. They don't work on Netflix, or in the video store or on cable television.

Video game ratings just tell the kids which ones are the "cool" games. Saves them money wading through the ones that don't have cursing and violence.

"I'm all for freedom of expression" except I don't like people twerking. The modern day equivalent of demanding that two teenagers leave room for the Holy Ghost between them when they're dancing....

Twerking....retarded. I don't want to see my daughter twerking, either, but not because it's pornographic. Mainly it's just embarrassing to the person doing it. It's dopey.

The kids have it so easy today when it comes to their porn. They can go to any smartphone, tablet or computer and have the most demented and increasingly shameful porn at their fingertips.

Back in my day when I was a kid, we had to work for our porn. We had to find discarded Playboy, Penthouse and if we were lucky Hustler magazines -- maybe the occasional Swank, Oui or Gallery magazine for the nastier stuff.... we had to actually think, and come up with covert ways to hide said porn, and ensure that we were not discovered. Even with the advent of cable television, our porn exploits required thought and ingenuity -- who among us did not figure a way to get the "scrambled" channel to behave so that 3/4 of the screen could display a sort of green hued image that would occasionally show us some skin?

Now, they get celebrities flashing poon when they get out of the car, and the kids can log on to Youporn from an incognito window and the parents are never the wiser.... Yeah, kids today have it easy...

Yeah, those tame videos of the past, like "Girls on Film" or "Smack My Bitch Up" or "Plug Me In" or countless other videos from the eighties and nineties were all fine. It's just now that it's got all terribly exploitative and porny since Miley Cyrus has been possessed by the devil.

WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!

"I'm all for freedom of expression..." she says before not being so.

Fuck off Annie Lennox. You're an old fart who played the androgynous shock card when it suited you and offended grannies back in the 80s. Get back in your box.

Annie, or should I say Tipper Jr: It ain't the nudity, it's the underlying tendency to go for he lowest common denominator: To make a simple corporate formula where there should be art.

It ain't the sex, it's the prepackaged contrived plastic dreams,
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

True that, fewer artists worth anything even bother making videos these days, it used to be an advert for the songs but since MTV because a station depicting the lives of overly entitled trash, it's not cost effective unless you're a big star or have someone make an interesting video. So in the main it is just corporate pop. Same as it ever was.

Same as it ever was.
