A Life Less Ordinary. The cover made it look like some lame romantic comedy and I was worried it was gonna suck hard. But it was Danny Boyle so I gave it a chance. And what a wonderful surprise. It was genuinely funny and not lame at all. And I cried at the end. That's my measure of a good film: does it made me laugh and do I cry at the end. Yes and yes, so this one gets the thumbs-up from tattuchu.

I Am Legend. Will Smith's best performance, at least that I've seen. No idea how it compares to the book. Don't really care. Judging it on its own terms, I thought it was very well done. Beautifully shot, well acted, nice sense of melancholy, and the zombies (unlike, say, World War Z) were actually kinda creepy.

"God doesn't exist because things are baaaaaaaaaad!" or something along those lines. I liked the movie up until that point.

The God stuff was a little bit of a surprise but I didn't mind it so much. And Will's diatribe against Go certainly made sense in that context. How could that woman actually believe in a god after he'd just let 99% of the world's population die? That's a rather heartless and/or useless god. Of course, to me, the very idea of a god is just supreme foolishness to begin with, and any good or bad stuff happening is irrelevant. But most people aren't me.SteveB wrote:"God doesn't exist because things are baaaaaaaaaad!" or something along those lines. I liked the movie up until that point.
And the whole thing about the butterfly, that seemed a little contrived. But then I shrugged and thought, "Well, it's poetic." And I like poetic.
One more Boyle film to go...

Pathfinder (2007). A violent action movie with Vikings vs American Indians. Like a Nicolas Winding Refn film, but let arty (pretentious?), and like a Frazetta painting come to life. Very stylish and extraordinarily beautiful to look at, and surprisingly not completely terrible as you might imagine. Between all the hacking and slashing, it actually had heart in there. And some decent performances. Unfortunately, it got sillier as it went along. Still, worth a watch as long as you're not expecting too much.

It has gotten to the stage now where it is pretentious to use the word 'pretentious'

Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave. Not quite what I was expecting, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Mud. Pretty good movie but surprisingly tear-jerkery at the end. Don't get me wrong I like a good cry at the end. Just felt it was a bit much.

"The World's End."
Not entirely funny but it has its moments. The main thing that impressed me what the way the film used the hokey format to touch upon some very pertinent issues regarding social collapse, the seeming emptiness of the Millennials and how my generation are having difficulty with accepting they're in charge now and have one way or another fucked everything up.
I'd give it eight thumbs up.

And, with that, we have reached a thousand posts. Somebody watch another film and start a new thread and I will add a linky.
