Oh that's an old one but a good one. I always found it interesting that Carpenter decided to call them "Hofmann Lenses" which considering the nature of the story I always assumed referred to L.S.D. manufacturer Albert Hofmann.

His point about being forced to freedom is well known within mysticism many who have rituals and rites that are supposed to bring people to the edge of insanity or death causing rapid brain change to allow them to become temporarily focused on the moment and become enlightened, then they go and fill the neo-natal illuminate with a whole fresh ideology. Born again.

I'm uncertain if any of it is actually necessary, probably just quicker.
