Looks like the most recent chemical attack was also the work of the rebels.

http://intellihub.com/2013/09/01/syrian ... -accident/
A group called Doctors Without Borders travelled to a town called Ghouta, where over 350 people were killed as a result of the chemical attack. After interviewing “numerous…doctors, Ghouta residents, rebel fighters and their families,” they obtained testimony that the attack was a result of mismanagement, and a mistake on the part of the rebels, who didn’t realize what kind of weapons they had.

“My son came to me two weeks ago asking what I thought the weapons were that he had been asked to carry,” the Mint Press quotes Abu Abdel-Moneim, the father of a rebel who was killed in a tunnel during the chemical attack.

Some weapons had a “tube-like structure,” and others allegedly resembled a “huge glass bottle,” Abdel-Moneim said.

“They didn’t tell us what these arms were or how to use them,” said a female rebel, known as “K” to protect her identity. “We didn’t know they were chemical weapons. We never imagined they were chemical weapons.”
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

That story has been floating about for a while - that Saudi Arabia gave them the weapons but didn't tell them exactly what they were.

The UN is the only suitable venue to work these things out and the US (and allies) have made a mockery of the UN with it's refusal to enforce sanctions on Israel. Why the fuck would Russia or China approach the UNSC honestly when the US shows no respect to the institution. It's not broken because of some "the whole is greater than the parts" bollocks. It's broken because its member states treat it with no respect.

You seem to have drunk too much of the "exporting democracy" cool-aid. The US, China, Russia etc don't care about foreigners outside of their own interests. The problem for the US is that people see through all the bullshit spin. And all you can say in response to that is "oh please".

The UN has been hamstrung by China and Russia, who refuse to act in response to obscenities like Syria because it creates a precedent of condemnation that would also apply to their totalitarian regimes.

Militarised chemicals, on the battlefield in a glass container? That seems odd to me.

You missed the "Israel" point. How you can seriously leave the US out of the failings of the UN?

Probably a metal container shaped more like how you'd expected glass container to be shaped? I think something might have gotten lost in the translation.

Got a less ropy source for that? Conspiracy website? Seriously?

Google that phrase exactly with the quotes, 62,000 hits on Google so it is not fringe.

The current front page of that site would have one hiding underneath the table in anticipation of impending Armageddon.

I don't have any illusions about the US and its stymying of effective action to curb Israeli behaviour. Nor about the US opposition to International judicial systems - for war crimes etc.

Nonetheless, China and Russia have stood dead against anything that would reduce totalitarianism and oppression - and this is an overt breach of the fundamental principles of the UN.

Brazil, India, Germany - they all want to be permanent members of the security council. Maybe they should demonsttrate a successful military intervention somewhere, as an entrance exam....
