Nowadays in most of the west though, women are equal or at least a lot closer to equal under the law. So there we've moved on to cultural issues which are a lot less clear cut.Hermit wrote:Feminism proper is about seeking opportunities for women that are equal to those of men. What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould

So who do we network to change social attitudes towards something like say rape and victim blaming? And how would one go about it?Hermit wrote:Networking and lobbying will suffice nowadays.fishie wrote:So how does proper feminism combat social issues?Hermit wrote:Feminism proper is about seeking opportunities for women that are equal to those of men. Re:
Join a network / lobby. I don't know where you live, but most countries have some such setup. If you can't find one, just put your foot down and insist on some kind of equity in your own household. If you press hard enough and talk about your problems in that regard with your friends, you'll find to your surprise that you have set up your own network / support group to achieve equity. If you go further, you will have established a lobby.fishie wrote:So who do we network to change social attitudes towards something like say rape and victim blaming? Ah so a bit like the movements that are turning up on social media all over the place?Hermit wrote:Join a network / lobby. I don't know where you live, but most countries have some such setup. Yes, but keep in mind that "social media" are not confined to the internet. Movements - apart from happening while squatting on a toilet bowl - can develop while chatting with a friend, neighbour or acquaintance while having a cup of coffee, tea, a bong, casual sex, or whatever else.fishie wrote:Ah so a bit like the movements that are turning up on social media all over the place?

So movements such as FEMEN, and Destroy the Joint, and WWR, would be examples of feminism proper then, having begun quite small.Hermit wrote:Yes, but keep in mind that "social media" are not confined to the internet. I get to start? Ok. I don't get why you think there are different sorts of feminism and why some are ok and some aren't. I am a curious fish by nature.

Perhaps you could tell us what you think about feminism, or the various manifestations that purport to be feminism.

I like FEMEN. I'm not familiar with the others.
But the other sort of feminism is plain to be seen on Apelust.

Are these different feminisms discreet or is it more like a spectrum?
