There was never really a moment in this entire match when either side could be said to be clearly in front - as soon as one started to think they might be getting close to that point, something happened to turn the tables. I only hope the rest of the series is like this. If so, we are in for one fuck of a rollercoaster ride!

OK, OK, pedantic one. I was discounting ties. How many of them did we have in the history of test cricket? That's right: Two. Both of them involved Australia, but neither England.
But yes, a close test makes for excitement, but so do the vagaries of the game that can bowl over what seems like a foregone conclusion without the bat of an eyelid. One such occasion occurred when Australia enforced the follow on and Ian Botham smashed us to oblivion with ball (aided by Willis) and bat. Alan McGilvray, the best cricket commentator ever, and his capable colleagues painted such a good picture with their words that it had my ears being practically glued to the radio each night for the duration, shouting encouragement to our team and wincing at all the misfortune that befell us. No TV coverage where I lived at the time, but that didn't matter. I knew where second slip was or what a glance down the leg side looked like by then, or a hook that gets chased down and caught by the backward square leg as he scrambles toward the boundary.
With commentary like McGilvray & Co's even a seemingly interminable succession of eight-ball maiden overs featuring Geoffrey Boycott can be enthralling. That is, incidentally, how I discovered / got hooked by cricket somewhere in the early seventies. And I didn't mind that ChappellI and Chappell G smashed the living daylights out of whatever delivery came their way while Lillee D and Thompson J smashed the living daylights out of the opposing bats, until the Windies came to the party anyway.
And then came Packer's ODIs. Meh.
But enough of my rambling, and on to the next test. We'll beat you there, weather allowing, and go on to win the Ashes back. So there. :raspb:
