The British Geological Survey has estimated that the UK has trillions of cubic feet of shale gas reserves. Given the complex geology, it won't be as easy to extract as some deposits in the US but it still would potentially give the UK 10-20 years of independence from imports and a boost to the economy. Companies are queuing up to start extracting.
But....fracking was blamed for a small earthquake in Blackpool and there are a host of other environmental issues.

It's not the companies that are problem, it's US law, which is very lax in this matter. It is an increasing issue in areas of Queensland and NSW. Underground water resources are very important in Oz, so I am generally opposed, if harmful chemicals need to be injected to release the gas.
