To Hell and Frack: UK Shale Gas Reserves

Post by Clinton Huxley » Thu Jun 27, 2013 10:57 am

The British Geological Survey has estimated that the UK has trillions of cubic feet of shale gas reserves. Given the complex geology, it won't be as easy to extract as some deposits in the US but it still would potentially give the UK 10-20 years of independence from imports and a boost to the economy. Companies are queuing up to start extracting.

But....fracking was blamed for a small earthquake in Blackpool and there are a host of other environmental issues.

So, the UK: To Frack or Not To Frack?

Then I'm in favour. Anything that might dump that place into sea, can't be all bad.

Difficult to argue against that.

Better to keep them in reserve.

Iain Stewart had a good program on the BBC about this last week. Can't say I'd be too happy with fracking in my back yard, or within 10 miles of it.

Possible health issues. The fracking companies in the USA are so secretive that they will not disclose the chemicals being used in the fracking process.

No fracking, even brits have a right to reasonably clean drinking water.

Don't use US companies then.
Surely they wouldn't allow undisclosed chemicals to be used in the UK?

Yes, I do believe they treat their water before it goes into their taps.

It's not the companies that are problem, it's US law, which is very lax in this matter. In the UK (or Ireland, or I suspect anywhere in the EU), things would indeed be quite different.

How do you properly treat your water when you don't even know what's gone into the water table?

We have a natural resource of hot air in Westminster, can't we tap into that, make it socially useful?

Good idea. You could build giant Stirling engine driven generators.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

It is an increasing issue in areas of Queensland and NSW. Underground water resources are very important in Oz, so I am generally opposed, if harmful chemicals need to be injected to release the gas.
