Maybe it's different in the states. The checkpoints are random here. There's no way to know where they are unless your mates ring you up and tell you. Are they in a fixed location in the US?

It's a specific and limited power (as pointed out in the article I linked above (although, that's only one state in Australia; there's different rules in different states), and it serves a very good community need. Drink driving has historically been a very big problem in Australia. The very minor inconvenience from random breath testing, and the seemingly great benefit it provides to society is well worth the trade off.

Drink driving is a big problem everywhere, don't think the police here do random testing as such but they can target black spots near pubs and as basically everywhere in the UK has a pub within a mile well.

One of the reasons the book will be thrown at you if you are caught there really isnt an excuse in the UK to drink/drive (not that there is really an excuse anywhere).

It's one of those weird crimes that if someone sees a person climbing into a car drunk they will call the police but quite possibly won't if they seem a man beating his girlfriend. Drink drivers affect everyone , man beating his girlfriend people might not want to get involved in a personal matter.

Not a problem for me as I wouldn't even consider living somewhere that didn't have decent public transport, life simply wouldn't be viable without it. Life is becoming more urban anyway , if you want to go out partying live in a city or find a muslim who likes parties but not alcohol (done that quite a few times)
