I'm no authority on the subject, I'm just regurgitating what I remember.
I seem to remember that Reagan's "expert" advisers were aghast at what he shook hands on with Gorbachev, suspecting a trick.
You have to give Reagan credit for recognisng that Gorbachov was sincere, and that there was a historic oportunity.
Maybe the slight onset of Alzheimers dulled his sceptical nature. Whatever, he got it right.
I actually don't give Reagan the person much credit for anything.

I give him some credit for bringing the modern anti-evolution movement out of the woodwork.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I'll give him credit for showing that in America even a worthless backstabbing half mad anti-Semitic puppet with no real discernible quality other than to read his lines occassionally can make it all the way to the Whitehouse.

Heh. I'll give you lot something, you certainly pick a variety of colourful characters. The nearest we get is Anne Widdicombe and Boris Johnson.

I imagine the next Repug ticket will be The Zodiac Killer and Judge Holden.

We'd run the Green River and BTK against them. Dream ticket.

Nah, the Democrats will be running Jonie Mitchell's pansexualist transgender Cabala guru's (hand-built by Native Americans) Bible Burning Eco-Oven and Dr Mohammed Jihad of The American Institute for Self Loathing and the Caliphate.

Well, I've voted for both of them before, so I'm good with that.

Hey I'm not criticising. We voted in a badly programmed Nexus 5 replicant.

Always. That's the whole tragic point of the democratic process. Blame the voters for the ineptitude of the people they put in power. They chose and the majority of them couldn't wire a fucking plug, let alone appreciate the subtle complexities of international politics, nuance, give and take, compromise and diplomacy. In fact it seems to me the only reason people vote at all is so they know who they can complain about by saying "well I didn't vote for him!"

Being ignorant is optional in today's society.

IMHO, it also has something to do with the specifics of the democratic process in any given environment. The USA seems to be locked into a bi-partisan model, even though there is obviously a much wider (and more complex) spread of political positions in evidence, even within the two main parties.

Yeah but indolence seems fucking mandatory.
