Seriously, why do you persist in this fallaceous method of debating? You must realise that the majority of people on this forum are smart enough to know that quoting anecdotes is meaningless in terms of evidence.

If he keeps at it he may have enough for a biased statistical analysis.
Re: Guns used for lawful self-defense Pt. 5
Because it's not fallacious, it's perfectly valid evidence that your argument doesn't hold water. Every time I post an example of a DGU it shoots another hole in your swiss-cheese-like argument.Blind groper wrote:Seth

So, does that mean when some shooting somewhere happens, especially a school shooting, where all the sheeple freak out and demand more gun control, citing the most recent tragedy as their rationale for wanting more gun control; does that mean they are also using an anecdote as their evidence and it is also worthless when they do it?Blind groper wrote:Seth

Re: Guns used for lawful self-defense Pt. 5
Collector,
As I have pointed out before, mass shootings, while nasty, are not the real problem. There are roughly 20 mass shootings each year in the USA, with an average of 5 killed each time, totalling 100 killed each year. At the same time, each year 8,000 people are murdered with hand guns.
That is why I am so strongly against hand guns and have so little worry about nut cases buying up assault rifles and the like. It is hand guns that are used in the most murders. All other firearms put together are used in only one sixth of American firearms murders. Hand guns in five sixths.
For this reason, you are correct. Anecdotes about mass shootings do not convey the truth about the firearms murder problems in the USA.
In the same way, when Seth posts more anecdotes about DGU's, he is posting hot air. Each year, a few DGU's (like the few mass shootings) will happen. However, quoting individual stories is just an attempt to mislead. Anyone who relies on anecdotes should be automatically considered to be talking bullshit.

And yet violence using any or no weapons at all accounted for only 0.98% of all deaths worldwide in 2002.

Violence at 0.98% of all deaths is a good mark of a long term trend. Deaths from violence have been dropping for a long time. The USA is lagging behind other western nations, but is slowly improving. It will not catch up with more advanced and more civilised western nations, of course, until it reigns in the crazy gun culture.

Each and every incident is another data point that impeaches your claim. And you never challenge the veracity of the reports, you just dismiss them and ignore them.Blind groper wrote:Collector,

You call it "hot air" but as Collector said, YOU use exactly the same sort of data to bolster your argument. Each individual killing of that 8000 you keep referring to is, according to you, an "anecdote" and by your own reasoning should be dismissed.
But you don't, you compile these "anecdotes" into a long list of wrongful handgun murders and then try to dismiss MY examples merely because my "anecdotes" directly refute of your aggregate murder data.
Sauce, goose, gander.

Yes. More people die from diarrhea than violence.JimC wrote:The grim reaper comes for us all, Faku...Făkünamę wrote:And yet violence using any or no weapons at all accounted for only 0.98% of all deaths worldwide in 2002.

The answer is no.
This is a debate, and I will continue to exercise my prerogative, and contribute to the debate.
Nor will emotional outbursts from you impress anyone.

All you keep basically saying is, "my culture is better than yours."
That's not "debating."
