And in any event, it would be an uphill task to belittle such a prodigious enterprise , which, I am reliably informed, has more than 3,000 stores and employs 195,000 employees across Australia and New Zealand, that span food, liquor, petrol, general merchandise, home improvement and hotels.

Is it the same Woolworth's we used to have in the United States? I don't think there are any here any more, but they sound like they were similar sorts of general stores-- many sorts of things sold under one awning.
