Any Tips On Learning How To Draw?
Hi there. I want to learn how to draw stuff. I can come up with a great image in my head, but when it comes to putting it down on the page, it just turns to shit. I think the part that screws me up is that I can't seem to make perspective. Anyone have any info on online resources?

I'm just speaking from experience.
I never learnt to be a good drawer I just was.
The people in my art class were as bad coming in as they were leaving.
Just like I was always shit at football no matter how hard I tried.

Try a life-drawing night class. You might not get any better but you will get to be crap whole looking at naked people.

Re: Any Tips On Learning How To Draw?
yeah, I remember once when I was at art college my tutor said it's 20% drawing 80% observation. So maybe like XC says, do some life drawing; that is great for broadening your skills.
(obviously that's not going to immediately help with you wanting to draw from your imagination, but it'll come. Intention and practice
).
It's funny though because even though I think anyone can draw/paint etc I also know what animavore said about people not being able to draw and that not changing; I think it's to do with their self confidence. Just using the words "I can't draw"-self defeating immediately. I went to a counselling session one time when I was a bit loopy and my therapist asked me to draw a picture (an A1 piece of paper) with my left hand (I'm right handed). I sat there for ages thinking "I can't draw with my left hand, it'll look like shit". But she said that the exercise wasn't about how good I could draw something. This helped me let go of the perfectionist in me and I just started doodling. I was soon lost in what I was doing and I ended up drawing an amazing piece of art with a hand that I never used. Mind stuff eh?

Try drawing more unusual things like goats skulls or pineapples. The more lines, curves, angles and shadows the better.
And use a good, heavy pencil.

Re: Any Tips On Learning How To Draw?
Thanks. I think I just have to learn to practice perspective and if I can learn how to do that, then it'll renovate my brain and add that automatically when I'm figuring out how to sketch the lines on a particular image. So no-one has any links to online resources?Animavore wrote:Try drawing more unusual things like goats skulls or pineapples. The more lines, curves, angles and shadows the better.

No offense to Animavore, but his advice is probably going to be pretty much useless to you.Manofnofaith wrote:Thanks. I don't doubt that he may have some very good natural drawing skills, but that ability is of virtually no use for someone who is trying to learn the skill of drawing. It's kind of like a someone with the natural ability to play a musical instrument "by ear" trying to tell someone how to play the instrument the same way when that person doesn't know the basics of playing the instrument. You need to learn the basics first.
As for the online resources, I can't do much more than what I did above, give the Google link:

Actually, there is one other recommendation for an online resource; Mark Kistler's Imagination Station. It's geared to cartoon-y type drawing (and geared more towards kids), so I don't know if it is what you want, but it should be worth checking out. He has PBS shows. I remember some of the earlier ones, and I remember he seemed to cover the basics pretty well.
