Coldplay are the type of band your parents would, and do, like. It automatically disqualifies them from any "Greatest Album" category.

To my knowledge, I've never heard a single song of theirs. I only know that everybody's supposed to hate them. Why do they suck?

They don't suck. They are just there, being impressively professional and inoffensive, you would probably leave it on but not remember or comment. Stealth Muzak. God help us if they weaponise it.

Do not panic. (Do... Not... Panic)

Oh. Airwave filler material, then. Gotcha.

And that to me highlights a big part of the problem: I listen to albums so that I can get deeper into music than would be possible by listening to the radio - well, "mainstream" radio anyway.

"Albums." I remember them. :cane:

Oh yeah ... don't even talk to me about individual track downloading killing the album format. :irate:

Right, don't get angry about that. It will just mean that music will fracture further and commercial pop will be utterly separate from the rest of the music industry. The end of the time limitation of "album" allows greater conceptual continuity for artists because they are no longer going to be pressured by distributors to release something they think will sell along with the constraints of the album format (which I don't think will ever go.)

I was speaking about this to my musical Amish friend actually, that I noticed there were now bands who for want of a better word were album bands, bands like Tool or Grizzly Bear or even the recently revitalised My Bloody Valentine. Their music is thematic and in some cases limited by common pop constraints like time length or vocals and such, where as there are bands that produce albums that sound more like playlists. The Vaccines, L.C.D Soundsystem, Animal Collective are examples of this but we used to (my pal pointed out) be called "singles" bands.

The point is that music is changing because the distributors and record companies no longer call the shots and their stable of talent is so restricted to what is profitable in the short term and mainstream that in trying to please everyone they are pleasing no one. I don't think it's hard or even relevant to be "number one". Nowadays it's like the employee of the month award.

Music IS getting better.

No good music in the last 25 years?! You just aren't even trying. Even just the last 5!

Just a little bit of the rock stuff off the top of my head. I won't push it by suggesting there is great hip-hop coming out as well (there is) :hehe:

it's in so much tv and movies I'd be surprised if that was true. I think this was the one that started it all (and, I still kinda like it):
