You said it more succinctly than I, but what I meant was more that for some reason people are more precious when it comes to pop music that most other forms of art. I know there has been a fashion of listing top tens of things for a while, but they don't inspire the same ire.

I would have the same general opinion of Coldplay. But to be in the all-time favourite league, their work would need to be something really special, which it's not IMHO.

The presence of Duran Duran in the top 10 is also setting off alarm bells in my head.

My long-term avoidance of mainstream music radio seems to have been a good idea after all. :shifty:
I like Duran Duran. And their bass lines are actually really sophisticated.

And Joshua Tree is a great album.

If they'd chosen Zooropa, I'd have been worried.

I went to Hollywood and took pictures of the stars on the sidewalk. Bono, Madonna and Cher I boycotted. People with just one name are too famous to relate to normal people. Sting too.

What will I do with the U2 albums?

Keep anything up to and including Zooropa. Ditch anything newer than that.

Maybe on your side of the pond, but not over here. Even so, putting them in the top 10 is stretching it IMHO.
I think I would probably put three Pet Shop Boys albums in my own personal all-time top 10. Cutting it down to just three would be the hard part...

The following have some business at or near the top 10. The BBC Radio poll illustrates the bankrupt nature of popular music and culture today.

Robert Johnson - King of the Delta Blues Singers
The Beatles -- Sgt. Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road, Rubber Soul and/or Revolver
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited or Blonde on Blonde
The Velvet Underground and Nico - The Velvet Underground
Jimi Hendrix - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run or the Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle
Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company - Cheap Thrills
Nirvana, Nevermid
Metallica - The Black Album or Ride the Lightning
Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
ACDC - Highway to Hell
Led Zepellin 4
The Stones - Exiled on Main Street
The Doors - LA Woman

There are plenty more that ought to be up there. Coldplay?

The Stones - Exile on Main Street
Marvin Gaye - What's Goin on.
Elvis - the Sun Sessions

As I mentioned earlier, a poll of BBC Radio 6 listeners might produce very different results. BBC Radio 1 and 2 are both decidedly "mainstream".

Of course, if you poll an audience that has very varied and eclectic tastes, then you're likely to get very fragmented voting. C'est la vie.

It resembles in some ways the CD selection at Target. I don't know what they are, the hits. Then the oldies are all 30-50 years old. 1970-1980 did not happen other than LZ and a few heavies.

I don't know what the hits are either. What little* music I've bought that was issued in the last 15 years is certainly not "mainstream".

*I don't know how many albums that might be. 50? 60? 70? Something in that ballpark. In that period, I've bought several times the number of albums that were issued before the mid-1990's, sometimes a long time before.

All average standards. Then it is Radio 2 isn't it? :coffee:

My "all time favourites" collection would certainly include some albums from the last 25 (nay 20) years. In fact, I'd probably have considerably more 90's albums than for the 80's.
