I just remembered Billie Whitelaw. She may deserve the crown, for her performances of Beckett if for nothing else. Here she is in Beckett's "Not I". Worth watching from the beginning, as she speaks for a few minutes about working with Beckett (who called her performance "miraculous").
I don't know of any other actress capable of such sustained intensity.
