The Zilla-unit has been punished for breaking me. This will not be allowed again.

New power supply and in-home service. The in-home rate was $95/hr cheaper than The Geek Squad.

It's not dead, it's pining for the hard drive bay.

The repairguy drilled a hole through it with a 1/4" drill bit, then put in in a bucket of salty water. He did this while I was watching him. It's his way of showing that he won't be retrieving anything off it. (I donated the rest of the machine to him, he restores them for charities.)

So, yeah, it's dead.

And I'm only showing 6 gig of memory. :(

Huh? Is this a change from before? And are you getting an error message?

Was eight. I may be paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?

What's the BIOS showing at startup?

What's Windows showing? (Right-click the computer icon -> Properties)

Is there an error message anywhere that you can see?

Try a system information tool like PC Wizard http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/pc-wizard.html or HWInfo http://www.hwinfo.com/. The standard PC Wizard download has 32- an 64-bit versions, but HW Info has separate downloads. You'll need 64-bit versions in each case.

Need more coffee before I do any of that. I do get a warning that a drive is saying it's going to fail. It's my factory image drive so I'm not totally worried about it.

Hard drive failures must be like buses ... :nervous:

Anyway, the RAM issue is completely separate.

Yeah, and the system now reports 8 gig. The backup process may be slogging that. I had it set to run all night, but Windows decided to update the system without asking me.

Salt water won't damage the aluminium surfaces of HD wafers, and a drill bit will punch a clean hole through and only damage a small fragment of the retrievable data - if you can consider the high speed which they spin you can easily envisage how the mechanical properties will lend them selves to a clean drill hole rather than any fragmentation fracture.
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?
