The repairguy drilled a hole through it with a 1/4" drill bit, then put in in a bucket of salty water. He did this while I was watching him. It's his way of showing that he won't be retrieving anything off it. Is there an error message anywhere that you can see?
Try a system information tool like PC Wizard http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/pc-wizard.html or HWInfo http://www.hwinfo.com/. The standard PC Wizard download has 32- an 64-bit versions, but HW Info has separate downloads. You'll need 64-bit versions in each case.

Salt water won't damage the aluminium surfaces of HD wafers, and a drill bit will punch a clean hole through and only damage a small fragment of the retrievable data - if you can consider the high speed which they spin you can easily envisage how the mechanical properties will lend them selves to a clean drill hole rather than any fragmentation fracture.
