Value of used CDs
It's about a dollar in trade at local shops. Some will also buy, not sure of rate.

For intact undamaged CDs, they trade 300 for a new 16MB iPod.
Their advice is good for checking CDs
Did you buy your CDs/DVDs individually one-by-one in a record- or video store or online?
Are the CDs in their original cases with complete front and back cover art (dusty or broken cases are okay)
Are the CDs/DVDs without visible scratches if you hold them approximately twelve inches from your face?
If they are scratched, keep them or toss them.

Re: Value of used CDs
I used to buy all mine in a store, something which is rapidly becoming a thing of the past whether I like it or not. Of course, I don't seem that interested in buying music much these days anyway.
I can't remember the last time I actually played a CD though - I just rip all mine straight to MP3/FLAC. I even threw out all the cases (but not the inlay sleeves) to save space. I've done the same with my DVDs.
My music and VHS video cassettes were all dismembered years ago and disposed of, with as much as possible going to recycling. No money made there ...

Re: Value of used CDs
Amazon has surprisingly good rates, Tero. Have you tried them? They always give me a lot more than I expect for used DVDs and video games, though I don't think I've ever tried selling CDs.
Are you trying to sell your CDs? If so, give me a list of what you've got

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Re: Value of used CDs
I still like having the physical CD, though I rip them immediately and rarely play them again. I've recently started downloading MP3s, but I miss having the liner notes. I've still got boxes of vinyl, and a BIG box of reel-to-reel tapes. Unfortunately I don't have anything to play either on. I'd love to rip the reel-to-reels to CD, I've got some stuff I don't want to lose, like my Dad's semi-pro barbershop quartet and a bunch of Les Paul and Mary Ford.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Not selling yet. I used to have more books than CDs weightwise. I disposed a lot of the books I never opened anymore. Many were reference and nonfiction.

Yeah, but did he keep copies? That would not be playing fair.Audley Strange wrote:I know a guy who transferred all his to 3 external hard drives and E-bay'd them he made a couple of grand.

I could easily do that myself BTW.

Re: Value of used CDs
As long as you own an original you are allowed to make copies. He owned the originals, paid for every one of them (the nutter) and sold all the originals, which he is also legally entitled to do, he paid for the information, not the medium. So far its still legal. Though the whole digital property rights thing might change that in the future.klr wrote:Yeah, but did he keep copies? If he gave me his hard drives and I copied them then the trouble could start.

Re: Value of used CDs
Say you got a hundred million and used them as a parabolic mirror couldn't you generate enough heat to power a small city? Seems a waste to just throw them away?

Re: Value of used CDs
CDs are poor mirrors as they refract most of the light shined on them - that's why you can use them to make spectrographs
Recycling the plastic in them would be a better idea.

That could be sorted by some sort of gentle heating process and melting the little rises?Făkünamę wrote:CDs are poor mirrors as they refract most of the light shined on them - that's why you can use them to make spectrographs

The bits are actually below the surface so I don't think that'd work. You could use them to signal rescue planes if you were washed up on a desert island with your CD collection though.

Why would I want to do that? Hell is other people.Făkünamę wrote:The bits are actually below the surface so I don't think that'd work. You could use them to signal rescue planes if you were washed up on a desert island with your CD collection though.
