Who is the best actor and actress, presently?

If you had to pick one actor and one actress to be the best actor and actress in the world today, who do you think it is?

I think if I had to choose, I would choose Johnny Depp, and Meryl Streep.

Daniel Day-Lewis runs a close second to Johnny Depp, and part of me wanted to rank him higher. Second to Streep, I think is Jodie Foster.

Robert Downey Jr. is up there in the top 5 on my list, I think.

Depp, I think, is very versatile, having been the Mad Hatter, and also George Jung, etc. -- he can seem to meld into whatever character he plays, and you don't really know it's him. Same with Daniel Day Lewis.

^^ That's the reason I wouldn't agree with Nicholson. He's had a few roles that really suit him, but essentially he always plays Jack Nicholson. Depp is similar, though I think he has a bit more range.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is one actor with whom I'm constantly impressed as to variation and range of characters.

I put Nicholson among the actors of the past. He was at one point among the best actors, but he hasn't done much lately that is of note.

Hoffman is right up there, though. I agree with Bella.

The movie wasn't great, but he was great in it! Picking a crap movie to act in doesn't count against acting abilities!

Oh you took me up wrong. I wasn't picking out a bad film he was in to go against his ability. I was just thinking there are much better films Coito could've picked. Donnie Brasco, for instance.

He was good in Donnie Brasco and Blow, too. He can do weird roles, like Secret Window, and also be convincing as a mob mole and a cocaine dealer. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was awesome.

Javier Bardem and DDL are good choices and of course the Streep. I also like that new up and comer from Zero Dark Thirty Jessica Chastain.
