I just moved from very white Austin, Texas to a mostly black part of Washington, DC. I am the minority in daily life here. My landlady is black and introduced me to one of her black friends, who in turn invited me into her home for Christmas dinner. It was wonderful. And, all of my daily interactions are with black people - bank, grocery store, DMV, Metro, on the street. I've never been so well treated and welcomed.

Something very cool has happened. I admit that in the past I saw black people as being 'they all look the same'. I think it's a shortcut that our minds make to quickly categorize people. I understand that everybody in any given race does it. But once here in the midst of a mostly black environment, and since I ride the Metro a lot, I started really looking at people. I admit that the black women here caught my attention first, duh. Beyond the female form I saw that they did a lot of work on their hair. Which made me look at their face (no, really!) more than I would have. Which made me become way more sensitive/appreciative of different faces. Which expanded my view. There's huge variety! Suddenly I saw all the various skin tones, body types, dress, attitude and individuality that we all carry.

When I went to Christmas dinner there were three twenty-something black women there. One in particular was the living image of my older daughter, except black. The other two were fully realized young women who just happened to have a skin tone. As we talked, color vanished. Now I see every black person as a real individual. The weird thing is, now most white people all look the same. I feel really comfortable here.

If you were a Southern (US) man of amused's generation, you might need to come through a lot to be as enlightened as he is.

Well it's not true to say they Irish aren't racist at all. There certainly are racist Irish people. I remember as a child my friend's older brother told us a racist joke. It went, "How do you hide a nigger in a coal bunker?" The answer was, "Knock his teeth out."
My other friend's laughed but I had to say, "I don't get it." He told me it was because their teeth were white and whould show up in the dark or similar. I got it then but I just didn't find it funny. I guess it was just because it was never brought up in my house. My parents always listened to black music and watched black comedy so I guess I never saw them as anything different.

I was deeply shocked and saddened in the 90s when a black family (keeping in mind Ireland was generally without black people up 'til then) moved in next door, they were from Africa, and I overheard my parents giving out about them and calling them "niggers" and everything. It was a side of them I didn't know was there. I guess they were fine with black people as long as they didn't live on their doorstep.
