Church of England general synod votes against women bishops

The general synod of the Church of England has voted against the appointment of women as bishops.

The decision came at the end of a day of debate by supporters and opponents - and a 12-year legislative process.

The measure needed two-thirds majorities in each of the synod's three houses - bishops, clergy and laity.

Controversy had centred on the provisions for parishes opposed to women bishops to request supervision by a stand-in male bishop.

(continued, with a new suffragette movement?)

So the CofE have voted to stay in the 9th century yet again - no surprise there then... :tea:

Why are they voting/debating? I thought they were supposed to get answers to these kinds of questions from god? :crumple:

It was the Laity that swung it, it passed the other two houses. Hmmm.... :eddy:
The House of Bishops voted 44 in favour, with three against and two recorded abstentions. In the House of Clergy, 148 voted in favour, 45 against and there were no abstentions.

But in the House of Laity, which represents lay members in parishes around the country, 74 voted against, compared to 132 in favour with no abstentions.

It will also make it harder and harder to actually get priests/vicars for every CoE parish.

Such is the shortage of clergy, even my mother now thinks there should now be women priests - and she's Catholic. Who'd have thought it?

Oh they have women priests, however the 'laity' believe that god had different roles intended for men and women and women should not be 'above' men, thus no Bishops. More strategically the CofE has large numbers of followers in Africa and other parts of the old empire. They tend to be much more conservative and they have made threats about leaving the fold if this law was passed.

They can all fuck off.

I think we should start CofE+ I'm an atheist and am appalled at those privileged fucks not allowing me and others like me to be a bishop just because they created and defined the term.

Can I ask though, in all honesty, does anyone really give a fuck whether there are witches as well as wizards in the Jehovah cult? Surely it's their business and only theirs.

I think it's great. First the bitches want in our golf clubs, then they take over the footie, now they want to shepherd our eternal souls. Fuck 'em, I say.

Good to see that the C of E are sticking to the 19th Century view of women by not approving Bishops without a penis :-)

And I actually mean that!

IMO the more out of touch a religion is with the society it operates within the better.........same reason I am very pro Gay marriage (on which subject I would otherwise simply not care)..........watching the Woo peddlers tie themselves up in theologicial knots and arguments (with the bonus of a(nother) possible schism!) is fun - with the bonus of making 'em look ever the more ridiculous :-)

I would much rather bishops with big tits and soft, yielding thighs...
