It has to do with the cause of illness and what was making her sicker. It is very likely that the "Catholic country" comment arose by way of an attempt at explanation as to why abortion isn't as openly available as in other countries, rather than any kind of religious agenda on behalf of the staff.

I am given to understand that even if the abortion was performed, she would still have been gravely ill, and an abortion would not have helped.

The HSE is investigating, and will publish the report in public. Until that happens, staff are banned from making public statements. The media has jumped into this vacuum with speculation and a readymade bias.
