I've never understood why there is such fanfare surrounding Hendrix. To my ear he is a good guitarist, not great, not a particularly inspired musician, and not a good vocalist. I hate to sound like tyrannical, but I suspect it has more to do with 'the black guy at Woodstock' thing.

Judging by shots of the crowd (overwhelmingly white, middle-class), there's probably something in that.

Listen to what other guitarists at the same time were doing and compare it to what Hendrix did. When you put it into context his genius shines through
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Well if you don't get Hendrix, you don't get Hendrix. It was brilliant move to hire a guitarist for a bass player. Redding has a unique approach to bass. The acoustic guitar ("high strung") is the Traffic guy.

Oh yeah, the black guy at Woodstock - he wasn't a guitarist though, was he?

Until this post, I had nothing but respect for you. :ddpan:

If you weren't around back then to know what sort of drivel we had to choose from, musically, before Hendrix (and Floyd, but that's a different story), then there's probably not much way you'll ever appreciate how innovative and iconoclastic this guy was. I'm not going to tell you to fuck off and die, because I still sort of like and respect you despite that post, but I would like to tell the person standing (or sitting) to your immediate left that s/he's got his/her head up his/her ass wrt Hendrix. Assuming that person isn't a Ratz member and I wouldn't get in trouble for saying so. :hehe:

Dood, seriously. I hope you someday realize all the barriers this guy broke and how that made what happened afterwards possible. Up to the present day. Srsly. Do you think RATM would have happened without Hendrix setting the stage?
