Where are the black guitarists?

Post by Tero » Sun Nov 11, 2012 7:10 pm

I am watching various assorted videos bands from 80s 90s 00s. There are bands of all sorts. They have a black drummer, bassist or wind player, or keyboardist. I can only think of Prince.

Who else is there?

One of my son's faves is a UK group with a black singer guitarist. Black people! Leave the rap crap.

Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

I meant the modern age. It's fine if Chuck plays at 80. I saw him at 70.

Basically, bands that were not formed till 1995 or later.

Apart from Hendrix though, none of the others ring a bell with me as being great guitarists - as opposed to great musicians who played the guitar amongst other things. Maybe I'm all wrong ...

Hell, I struggle to name any great guitarists from recent years, but maybe that's just because I've largely lost interest in contemporary popular music. I must be getting old.

Your OP mentions bands of the 80s... :tea:

There are a huge number of black guitarists out there. Pretty much every reggae, funk, or soul band has one! And then there's African world music. And jazz.

I suspect that the perceived lack is nothing to do with any genuine bias, but far more to do with your choice of listening!

The 80s: The decent black music back then was reggae. The guitar was a rhythm instrument.

Yeah, I have no idea how he does two handed tapping, seems the strings would be hard to keep track of. Three for one hand, three for the other?

Eddie Van Halen, for example, taps with the fretting hand.

Stanley Jordan pretty much invented two-handed tapping. There is footage of him playing two guitars at once on Youtube. The guy is teh serious OSSUM!
