Bestest game EVAR seeks re-development funds

Classic video game Elite is getting a 21st Century makeover.
David Braben, one of the creators of the original, is seeking £1.25m ($2m) via Kickstarter to fund the updated version.
Called Elite: Dangerous it will involve the same mix of interstellar travel, trading, piracy and spaceships as the original 8-bit game.
Those who pledge cash to the project will also get a chance to shape the development of the updated version.

Elite was the first PC game I got addicted to, on my first PC. There have been a few reincarnations since then, but apart from "Frontier" in the lat 80's/early 90's, nothing has come close to the original.

I saw this story (and played the game). Apparently if you contribute you get to influence the shape of the game at the end, which to me suggests Braben doesn't know how not to make it open ended like the original.

I loved it too, but it has a lot to do to compete with today's games - if of course that is his intention.

TBH if the X-series and Eve-Online were melded together then you have the new Elite, online, one server one universe. Man it would be hostile but fun.

I have a friend waiting for such a day so he can turn his cupboard into a "cockpit." I often wonder why no-one is taking my time and money from me with such a game. Get at it fools!

You could link up three big fuck off flatscreens as windows and 7.1 sound and stay in there even when they drag your wizened carcass to the nursing home.
