Suicides? Meh. Who cares, a suicide is a Darwinian dead end anyway, no great loss to civilization.
I have pointed out before that this is not a good way to look at suicides.
Works for me, especially when some jackass uses handgun suicides as an argument for infringing on my RKBA and my ability to defend myself against criminal predation.
Researchers have analysed what drives suicides and some solid information is now available. For example : The vast majority of suicides are done on impulse, and if the person survives, the impulse will not be repeated. Also, the impulse lasts for a critical period, which is in the range of a few minutes to a couple hours. If no suitable method of killing oneself is found in that time, the impulse passes and no suicide happens.
Peachy.
The point is that people who have an impulse to suicide, can survive that, and live long and reasonably happy lives if they do not find a suitable means of killing themselves.
Not my problem and I won't allow you to make it my problem by banning guns just to serve the interests of suicidal people. I really don't give a fuck if they kill themselves or not if the price is my rights and my safety.
The widespread availability of hand guns is an utter tragedy for these people, since it means that, where a hand gun is available, the affected person will die.
Better them than me, or anyone else who might be saved or protected by having a handgun. Using suicides as a gun control argument is a lame red herring argument at best, and intellectually bankrupt too boot.
60% of all suicides in the USA are with hand guns. Bearing in mind the shortness and non repeated nature of most suicide impulses, that means a lot of people are dying unnecessarily.
Sucks to be them I guess. Perhaps they should seek psychiatric assistance. Their problems are not my problems and cannot be used to remove my rights. If they cannot resist suicide just because they have access to a handgun, then they are better off dead, and so is everyone else.
12,000 hand gun suicides each year. If those hand guns were not easily available, most of those 12,000 people would not die, and would go on to live lives that could be full and satisfying.
Fuck 'em. Take handguns away to serve the needs of 12,000 mentally ill people and you victimize 2 million people a year who cannot thwart crimes or protect themselves through the lawful use of firearms every single year. Far better that they off themselves than that society take it up the ass while catering to their insanity.
Besides, using your idiotic argument we should ban pain killers, sedatives, bridges, rope, razor blades, knives, tall buildings and every other device used by suicidal people to kill themselves. That's just stupid. If they want to die, let them die quickly and relatively painlessly. Blowing your brains out meets both criteria. As I said before, I'd put up bulletproof kiosks with built in guns that allow you to walk in, lean your head back on a headrest and push a button and get your brains blown out for free. No loss to society at all.
