Scout of order: Devastated schoolboy banned from Scouts for not believing in God

A schoolboy has been banned from joining the Scouts because he does not believe in God.

George Pratt, 11, has been going to his local group for around 10 months and was delighted when they invited him to sign up as a full member.

But he was unable to swear allegiance to God and the Queen in the Scout Promise because he is an atheist – and has now been banned from attending.

George said yesterday: “I am really disappointed about not being able to go any more just because I don’t believe in God.

“We have spoken about it with the Scout leader, but he won’t change his decision, it is very unfair.

"My friends who are Scouts don’t think it is right, either.

“Everyone is going caving soon and I’ve never been before.

"It is something I would love to do, but I’m not allowed. I’m not going to change my decision though.”

While as an atheist I have every sympathy with the kid, the fundamental principles of Scouting include 'a duty to self, a duty to others and a duty to god'. Its in the first few lines of their core policy document. I guess one should be wary of what one joins.

Most young atheists just lie when they join the scouts. This poor sod is being punished for his honesty. A great lesson to learn so early in life, eh?

As a kid, I just avoided them. We found our own ways to keep ourselves entertained... and it didn't involve the God Squad(tm).

Sadly I didn't. I joined something called The Crusaders in Hong Kong. You got lots of activities including canoeing, camping and such and all you had to do in return was attend Bible class and give your life to Jesus!

I certainly did. This 'caring' youth movement's leaders informed me, when I told them I could not believe that stuff, that apostates could not return to Jesus and my fate was sealed.

They did have the cane, but it was never needed for me, I was a right little goody-goody...
