For those of you who have watched (and enjoyed) The Wire, I'd like to recommend The Shield.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286486/

It's finished now, and ran to 7 seasons. It is similar (in some ways) to The Wire. It is very well written with very strong characters.

Re Wallander - read the books, watched the BBC versions - I didn't have a problem with him being portrayed a wreck - there is just a study going on now showing the devastations that post traumatic stress wreaks on police families and officers.
There is an Icelandic novel in the genre with similar real life stresses from family etc.
The books portray Wallander a complete mess and walking wounded - the one he is close to being committed. So I'd say Branagh was bang on. The characters home life is a wreck, he drinks then doesn't, health is a mess and eats badly and he's haunted by what he's put his family through particularly his father and daughter.

real life limed a bit iconic for drama......why they are popular.

Love the shield...I think it's darker and more brutal than the wire though!

I definitely prefer the original, but the Branagh one was pretty good too.
I watched all of the "original" Swedish TV programmes (not watched the movies, yet) and then I watched Brannagh.

He was fucking awful... an emotional mess, from start to finish. And I'm not knocking him for being in touch with his feelings, as there's nothing wrong with being compassionate - but that works very badly in some professions. There is no way that that character could play a senior cop in any police force.

The Swedish (TV) version had issues, too, but he managed to be professional about it.
That's why I just read the books...

The movie plays out inside my head...
So you're a horror buff then?

Watching a documentary on a huge post-war housing project in St. Louis in the 50s and 60s, and how it went from a model to a slum within 20 years. Sounds completely dull but it's really interesting! :ask:
