Why is Gangnam Style so popular in the West?

Post by FBM » Tue Sep 25, 2012 5:57 am

Furr'ners in general, I mean. I think it's more popular overseas than in Korea. My girf and some of my students have asked me why so many foreign people like it. I've been over here so long that I can only guess. I like it, but I get more of the allusions than someone unfamiliar with Korea would, so it's not the same. What's up with the stellar success of that video? :dunno:

The sexy girls? The music itself? The humor? The combination?

For those who have been living in a cave:

"A philosopher is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there. A theologian is the man who finds it." ~ H. L. Mencken

"We ain't a sharp species. We kill each other over arguments about what happens when you die, then fail to see the fucking irony in that."

"It is useless for the sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism while the wolf remains of a different opinion."

It's a catchy song, the dance is easy to learn and looks neat and the video is funny.

:eddy: Thanks, Nib.

My girf thinks the fact that Psy isn't handsome or well-built adds to the appeal, mabye makes the parody aspect more obvious. Do you agree?

Definitely. Nerdy chubby azn guy trying to act cool is very funny to us unsophisticated Westerners. :teef:

Even more funny when he's so self-aware of his failings at trying to be cool. 8-) Which makes him actually cool! :o

Yes, I was happily living in a cave... You just had to roll away the stone, didn't you! :lay:

both seem reasonable. Then add the fact that certain random things "take-off" on the internet; going viral describes a behaviour where success feeds on success, and much positive feedback ensues...

:eddy: Cool. I'll pass these ideas on to the interested locals. Any other onions?

Is there a translation of the lyrics? Will it hurt? :shiver:

Let us think the unthinkable, let us do the undoable, let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

Oppa is Gangnam style
Gangnam style

A girl who is warm and humanle during the day
A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee
A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes
A girl with that kind of twist

I’m a guy
A guy who is as warm as you during the day
A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down
A guy whose heart bursts when night comes
That kind of guy

Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end

Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh

A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensable girl like that

I’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy

Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end

Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh

On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or two
On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or two

You know what I’m saying
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style

When I try to do the dance I look like this:
