Someone New to Complain About.

Post by Robert_S » Wed Sep 12, 2012 9:02 am

I'm growing tired of hearing about the A+/Skepchick/FtB crowd.

I've been tires of hearing about the evil jackbooted RatSkep mods for some time now.

Nothing seems to be brewing on the RDF front.

What website out there can we complain about now? We need new and interesting enemies. I demand that there be villains who serve my needs for righteous indignation and entertainment! :lay:
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Oh. I thought it was a statement rather than a request.

Complain about me if you want.

But I like you and you're so reasonable and interesting. Sorry, but I just can't work up a good rant against you.

Not only that, but you're a member here, which makes you one of us. I'm looking for a THEM. Those bastids! I hate them with a passion and I don't even know who they are yet. But mark my words, One day I'll find them and I'll find out all the dastardly things they do!

Fuck those fucking fuckers!!! :irate:

Dawww! I'm sure I could think of something, make a website about it, and get myself banned from here because of it. I bet I could.

I'm much happier not thinking about people that don't actually affect my life. I tried to ignore the FT and Skepchick stuff as much as possible, and regret that we were somewhat forcibly made involved when it came to our doorstep. I really can't wait till most the site goes back to not giving a shit

I'm glad it moved away from here again though, as now it's fun to be up in the peanut gallery watching in amazement. Aside from that, forum life goes on today as though it were just like any other. From the railway station came the sound of shunting trains, ringing and rumbling, softened almost into melody by the distance. It all seemed so safe and tranquil.

 I never strayed very far from not giving a shit, anyway. There's nothing they can do to hurt us.

I think it was Emerson who said "You become what you think about all day long."

On the other hand, Hitch said,
Hitchens wrote:For a lot of people, their first love is what they'll always remember. For me it's always been the first hate, and I think that hatred, though it provides often rather junky energy, is a terrific way of getting you out of bed in the morning and keeping you going. If you don't let it get out of hand, it can be canalized into writing. In this country where people love to be nonjudgmental when they can be, which translates as, on the whole, lenient, there are an awful lot of bubble reputations floating around that one wouldn't be doing one's job if one didn't itch to prick.
On yet another hand, though Hitch is best known for his angry stuff, he himself spent a lot - maybe most - of his writing and reading life concentrating on novelists, poets, essayists, and philosophers he loved. So he balanced out the hate.
I think that language has a lot to do with interfering in our relationship to direct experience. A simple thing like metaphor will allows you to go to a place and say 'this is like that'. Well, this isn't like that. This is like this.

Shades of WG Sebald's Austerlitz. Astonishing book, by the way. Truly great.
