Worldwide decline in religiosity it says here

Post by Rum » Mon Aug 13, 2012 3:01 pm

An interesting poll with lots of stats (including the one posted elsewhere about the decline of religion in Ireland). The report is quite short and indicates a marked international decline in the irrational belief in religious bullshit. Worth a look!

Was the UK not involved in that study?

It's by reading the paper, that I discerned that there was no mention of the UK or the separate constituent "kingdoms" of which said entity is constituted. My question sought confirmation that I hadn't missed something.

Maybe UK religiousity was below the limit of quantification.

Well there's an email contact at the top of the report. I've just sent a message asking them if there is a reason and what it might be!

Will post the response here if I get one.

Interesting reading. Not only is there an inverse relationship between income and religiosity at the individual level, but also at the national level.

Russia is as about as religious as the USSR was in Stalin's hyeday in the mid-1930's, although the 1930's figure was obviously understated.

I'm surprised to see Brazil still so religious. Let's hope for a big change there as the country gets more prosperous.

My country is not listed either.

There is another list, from Wiki.

A different method of looking at it. Instead of 3 categories, they have two. Is religion important to you, yes or no?
The UK and New Zealand are on this list, but weirdly I cannot find China.
For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

Less than half of Canadians would call themselves religious.

Not bad, eh?

There are only 57 countries listed. I have written to the contact person asking how they were chosen. Can't see an explanation in the body of the report though some of the criteria are listed.

Interesting. Right at the end it lists results by religion. Half of the people who list their religion as nothing are in the not religious category so you can confidently double the atheist category. The convinced atheist thing is badly worded. It should have been atheist or agnostic with "are you a convinced atheist?" being an extra question. So around 25% of the global population and rising. We are winning against the mind virus. :woot:
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Go, Korea! 46% either not religious or convinced atheist! :cheer:
