Favorite All-Time Olympic Moments
I think my number 1 Olympic moment, and my favorite Olympic achievement was the 1980 US Olympic gold medal in ice hockey, and in particular their defeat of the Soviet Union team in the semifinal round.
Perhaps the greatest underdog victory in sports history, not just Olympic history. To this day, 32 years later, it still gives me chills up my spine.
For those too young to remember, this is from when professionals were not allowed to compete. Only "amateurs." The Soviets, of course, managed to get around the rules, and had basically a professional team, and they'd dominated for 20+years. The US hockey team was a bunch of college kids who had never played a professional game in their lives and had never played together before training for the Olympics. They beat the best in the world.
After that, I think Derek Redmond's performance, pulling a hamstring and finishing -- brought tears to my eyes.
Just ignore the last 30 seconds or so, where it gets all "god" on us.... as if gods had anything to do with it. If god wanted to help him, fucking keep the hammy intact for another 250 yards.

Anyone who can make it through the Derek Redmond video without crying needs to check themselves for a pulse...

1956: Hungary and the USSR beat the shit out of each other during a water polo match, while the anti-Soviet uprising was going on in Hungary.

The Salt Lake and Vancouver gold medal hockey matches weren't that bad either.

A few minutes ago, fooking brilliant.
“I wish no harm to any human being, but I, as one man, am going to exercise my freedom of speech. No human being on the face of the earth, no government is going to take from me my right to speak, my right to protest against wrong, my right to do everything that is for the benefit of mankind. I am not here, then, as the accused; I am here as the accuser of capitalism dripping with blood from head to foot.”
