How do we attract Skepchicks to sign up here?
The picture of them we've been getting from some of our regular posters is a bit one-sided. I think we'd benefit from a wider range of viewpoints on gender issues.
Also, there has to be more to them than just their stance on feminism. For me, this site is actually more of a fun community than a serious debate place. There is the occasional drama and very occasional gross stupidity, but overall we are a very accepting and welcoming bunch.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Imagine how much it would make Pappa squirm!
The rules provide protection from personal attacks and I think Skepchicks are a small and narrowly definable enough group that attacking the Skepchicks as a group would also be considered a personal attack.

People like that don't know how to have fun. Too busy being oppressed. They really wouldn't fit in here.

That's a broad generalization and I'm very much aware of how wrong those can be.

Maybe if we drop the current apparent obsession about them that this site is broadcasting it would help. I expect we look as tedious to the outside world as we sound just now. (Hi, outside world!)
In any case, I'd rather see people sign up here (male or female) and join in as individuals rather than as a representative or spokesperson of some group.

In all seriousness, I do agree - however, it does take two to tango...Thinking Aloud wrote:Maybe if we drop the current apparent obsession about them that this site is broadcasting it would help. I expect we look as tedious to the outside world as we sound just now. (Hi, outside world!)

I think that would be great, I'm off to ban CES!Thinking Aloud wrote:Maybe if we drop the current apparent obsession about them that this site is broadcasting it would help. I expect we look as tedious to the outside world as we sound just now. (Hi, outside world!)

I prefer to talk to people as individuals, but hey can join as whatever they like. My point is that regardless of what Pappa says, they are welcome here and will be given all the protections under the rules that any other member enjoys.Thinking Aloud wrote:In any case, I'd rather see people sign up here (male or female) and join in as individuals rather than as a representative or spokesperson of some group.

And mine is that I don't think we should be trying to attract anyone here because of who they are, or what group they identify with (our general 'friendly rabid atheist' tagline being a guide to who's here already). I agree - all are welcome, but I'd much prefer to see people come here because they find us interesting and attractive as a group and want to join in. "How do we attract XYZ" makes it sound like we're trying to collect one of everything, or are seeking validation from them - we are who we are, foibles and failings included. People who can see through the BS spouted about Rationalia by the likes of PZM will hopefully recognise that on their own.

We needed to blow off steam after PZ's attack posting, but I agree it's time to move on. There are still cheeses uneaten and bacon that hasn't been used in an obscene manner before being served to loved one. We have work to do!

+10000, I was going to say exactly this, but probably not as eloquently.Thinking Aloud wrote:And mine is that I don't think we should be trying to attract anyone here because of who they are, or what group they identify with (our general 'friendly rabid atheist' tagline being a guide to who's here already). Tell them all about one of our meets. Who wouldn't want to get involved in one of those?
